TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS
San Francisco 2014 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Outside Lands Festival, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA; August 9, 2014. Very good audience recording.

At 63 (he turns 64 in October), one would think that Tom Petty would have taken the money and run. But that’s not the Tom Petty fans have long revered. As Billboard pointed out, Tom Petty is still passionate and kinda pissed. His latest album, Hypnotic Eye, talks about the unchecked greed of the 1 per cent; about growing old and he has even written a song about the Catholic Church’s sex scandals. While Playin’ Dumb didn’t fit into the new album, the song appeared as a bonus cut on the vinyl and blu-ray release of Hypnotic Eye.

And what makes Hypnotic Eye that much sweeter is that, after all these years, it is Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200.

Here are some comments Tom Petty made recently:

“That’s a huge problem in the world right now - you can see these wealthy people who have made so much money that making more will not change an hour of their lives or their children’s - yet they’re consumed with the idea of making more. Once they do that long enough, that doesn’t turn them on anymore. They want power, and a great deal of money buys power. Very few people know how to handle power and once they just become completely immoral, they’re dangerous people. This attitude is what, to me, wipes out the middle class.”

“I’m old enough to remember an America where if you were willing to be a fairly hard worker, you could support your family. You could even maybe own a home. Everybody was happy - not this, ‘Well, I’m not succeeding if I don’t have what these phony people, these soulless shells on TV, are wearing or doing.’ People have been conditioned to think that they should be wealthy.”

“I’m fine with whatever religion you want to have, but it can’t tell anybody it’s OK to kill people, and it can’t abuse children systematically for God knows how many years. If I was in a club, and I found out that there had been generations of people abusing children, and then that club was covering that up, I would quit the club. And I wouldn’t give them any more money… Religion seems to me to be at the base of all wars.”

“The only good thing about getting older is you get smart enough to avoid unnecessary problems. You know what’s worth spending time on and what’s not. If I had known that at 20, life would have been so much easier, but you have to experience all these things so you figure out how to find your way through the woods.”

  4. Thanks BigO! My frat twin and I are at the 1% - I’m in the bottom 1% and he is in the top 1%. My brother used his “influence” and billionaire friends to put a friend of his into the national top of the main political party - for a while, anyway. Money doesn’t cure ineptness. Thanks Tom Petty, for sayin’ it like it is, from a former lower-middle class.

  6. Hi BigO ;o) I love the eclectic mix of music on your site. Apologies for this request, but is there any way that you can ‘Restart’ Bruce Springsteen - Cannon Blast Lightnin’ Flash (Berkeley 1973)?
