Carrboro, NC 2014 [no label, 1CD]

Be Loud! Benefit. Live at the Cat’s Cradle, Carrboro, NC; August 9, 2014. Very good soundboard.

The Replacements (with Paul Westerberg) predate Mitch Easter’s Let’s Active by two years - The Mats formed in 1979 while Let’s Active started life in 1981 in North Carolina. A formidable singer-songwriter-guitarist, Mitch Easter is also known for producing R.E.M. And if you are not paying attention, both Easter and Westerberg do sound alike. But more importantly, where would jangle-pop be without The Mats and Mitch Easter?

On August 9, 2014, Let’s Active reunited on stage in Carrboro, NC for the first time in 24 years, performing an 11-song set at Be Loud! ’14, a benefit for the Be Loud! Sophie Foundation in memory of 15-year-old Sophie Steiner, who died of cancer last year.

The performance featured bandleader and R.E.M. producer Mitch Easter joined by founding drummer Sara Romweber and Game Theory bassist Suzi Ziegler filling in for original member Faye Hunter, who took her own life last summer. The Love Language’s Missy Thangs assisted on keyboards, and one-time bandmember Lynn Blakey pitched in, too.

Thanks to bynumite for sharing the tracks at Dime.

  2. Thanks for this! Fan of Mitch Easter since the early Drive-In Studio days. I still own a copy of REM’s Hib-Tone single. Saw them ca. 88-89 at Toad’s Place, New Haven CT. Remember Mitch introducing their cover of Led Zep’s “Dancing Days” by saying that he always wanted to sing “I got my flower, I got my power”.

    RIP Faye Hunter

  3. great post - make sure to find the “every dog has it’s day” cd, fantastic recording that didn’t get enough credit when released. RIP FH, and make a donation to the beloudsophie.org group in the name of Big-0…..
