Le Palace [Archivio ARC019, 1CD]

Live at Le Palace, Paris, France; December 4, 1984. Very good to excellent soundboard.

Lloyd Cole And The Commotions’ debut album in 1984, Rattlesnakes, might have been a US college favourite at that time but it certainly was one of the brightest albums of the year and the group was rightly lauded by the NME (NME has included it in its Top 100 Albums of All-Time list). [Though the group was formed in Glasgow, Scotland, Cole was English and he has since moved to the United States.]

Just consider the competition in 1984: Bobby Womack’s Poet II; Special AKA’s In The Studio; Womack & Womack’s Love Wars; Billy Bragg’s Brewing Up With Billy Bragg; Prince’s Purple Rain; The Smiths’ The Smiths and Rickie Lee Jones’ The Magazine, just to mention a few.

To paraphrase a review we ran back in 1985: From the man who wasn’t ready to be heartbroken, Lloyd Cole’s album is a trip down Magazine avenue with its minor characters, broken hearts and desperate dreamers. Propelled by that deliciously melodic guitar, Cole’s character studies are still some of the most compulsive in rock ‘n’ roll.

Tracks such as Perfect Skin, Rattlesnake and especially Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken? have withstood the test of time and continue to be as catchy and biting today as they were then. Here’s hoping that some readers would check out the group’s albums after this “short” introduction.

  2. This concert was originally released on vinyl by a french bootlegger, under the name of “Lloyd Cole and The Commotions Live / Elements Of Style”, with basically the same artwork. I bought it in the late 80’s, and still have a copy at home. No label, just a number : 57/002.

  3. I had the pleasure of doing an video interview with Mr. Cole when he played a club here in Asheville NC. What a delight he was to talk with. Witty, knowledgeable, and completely devoid of any disproportionate ego. If interested, here’s the link:

  4. And thanks Big O for posting this, and for all the other great music I stumble upon here.

  5. He was always considered a Lou Reed tribute act, (unless you went to Uni. or stayed in the West End of Glasgow i.e thought you were hip!)here in Scotland. His 15 minutes were up about 25 years ago.
