Bath Festival 1995 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Forum Theatre, Bath, UK; May 28, 1995. Very good to excellent BBC Radio 3 FM.

Here is something a little offbeat.

Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos teams up with Scottish percussionist Evelyn Glennie (who is profoundly deaf).

Vasconcelos is better known among jazz fans, notable for his works with Pat Metheny, Don Cherry, Egberto Gismonti, and Gato Barbieri. Awarded Dame Commander of the British Empire in 2007, Evelyn Glennie is the first person in musical history to successfully create and sustain a full-time career as a solo percussionist. In July 2012, In collaboration with Underworld, Glennie led 1,000 drummers for the world premiere of And I will Kiss and also premiered Caliban’s Dream’ on a newly-developed instrument called the ‘Glennie Aluphone’ accompanying the lighting of the flame in the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics.

Thanks to PsyKies for sharing the tracks at Dime.

PsyKies noted: “Recorded by me off air direct from the original broadcast in 1995 to a Panasonic Hi-Fi VHS video recorder in SP audio only mode. Sometime in the mid to late 1990s I misguidedly transferred all my radio recordings to VHS LP audio mode. This, combined with the age of the tapes, has resulted in some evident distortion throughout.”

  2. nice find; don’t think these two ever officially released an album together so that makes this particularly valuable; it’s obscurities like this that make this site so worthwhile; thanks.

  3. Never thought I would hear this again! The performance was part of the Bath International Festival in 1995 at what was at one time, the Forum Cinema. My wife and I were present in the balcony and thoroughly enjoyed the evening with our daughter and a care client of hers.
Thanks to PsyKies for making the effort recording and now making this available.
Talking of the venue - has anybody out there got recordings of any other Bath Festival concerts?
I would particularly interested in recordings of the times when The Michael Nyman Band, Dave Brubeck Quartet and / or Mccoy Tyner played the Festival at the Forum.
    Once again - many thanks.

  7. If anybody out there is interested - I’ve just found my ticket for the event, tucked away in a E.G. compact disc. The actual date of the concert was Sunday 28 May 1995 but it may well have been broadcast at a later date. By the way, on the ticket, Evelyn Glennie is billed before Nana. Thanks again for this and keep up the good work.
