Santa Monica 1976 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Santa Monica Civic Center, Santa Monica, CA; March 6, 1976. Very good FM broadcast.

In the liner notes to Portrait - The Music of Dan Fogelberg from 1972-1997, Paul Zollo wrote: “Hitting the road in 1974 with Fool’s Gold, a young band from Illinois, [Dan Fogelberg] toured for the next two years. “Suddenly we were rock stars. These were heady days. We were soaking it up, and thought we were more important than we were. But really we were just these kids from Illinois with high voices.”

But it was Nether Lands in 1977 that Fogelberg felt was a critical album. He said: “When I made Nether Lands, I felt that I had finally made a grown up record. That I wasn’t a kid anymore, and that I was finding my own voice as a writer.”

However, with songs such as Longer, Leader Of The Band and Same Old Lang Syne, Fogelberg became known as a voice for easy-listening or soft rock in the ’80s; to many, along the veins of The Eagles, England Dan and Bertie Higgins.

According to an AP article, Fogelberg’s music was powerful in its simplicity. He did not rely on the volume of his voice to convey his emotions; instead, they came through in his soft, tender delivery and his poignant lyrics. Songs like “Same Old Lang Syne,” in which a man reminisces after meeting an old girlfriend by chance during the holidays, became classics not only for his performance, but also for their engaging story lines. Later in his career, he would write material that focused on the state of the environment, an issue close to his heart. In 2007, Fogelberg died of cancer. He was 56.

  10. Good that we ended with some solid songs. “New Speedway Boogie” by Marc Cohn vs. “Wagon Wheel” by Against Me!: 6.8 : 7.4“Hallelujah” by Rufus Wainwright vs. “Killing Me Softly” by The Fugees: 8 : 6.5I am not a huge fan of Rufus or this song, but his gentler arpopach appealed to me a lot more than Buckley’s version. Tough match-up against Killing Me Softly.“Rhythm of the Rain” by Dan Fogelberg vs. “Mad World” by Gary Jules: 5.5 : 6.2“All Tomorrow’s Parties” by Young Man vs. “Wake Me When It’s Over” by The Supersuckers 7.3 : 4Was not feeling the Supersuckers. As for Young Man, I feel like this isn’t the version we listened to earlier in the tournament. Which is fine, this is good too, but I really liked the version when they were all sitting in a circle. Or is that a different group?

  11. Thank you! I had a few of these recordings, but they were poor - off an old cassette thru a mic next to the radio, then dubbed so me and my friends could have copies. Thanks for posting them.
