SHARON JONES R.I.P. 1956-2016

Sharon Jones, the fiery soul singer who spent decades in obscurity before becoming a Grammy-nominated soul and funk vocalist with her longtime backing band the Dap-Kings, died on November 18, 2016 of pancreatic cancer. She was 60. “We are deeply saddened to announce that Sharon Jones has passed away after a heroic battle against pancreatic cancer,” the singer’s rep wrote in a statement. “She was surrounded by her loved ones, including the Dap-Kings.” Doctors diagnosed Jones with stage two pancreatic cancer in 2013 and removed the singer’s gallbladder, the head of her pancreas and 18 inches of her small intestine. She went into remission nine months later, but announced that the cancer had returned at the premiere of Miss Sharon Jones!, a documentary detailing Jones’ life and career. The cancer would be elevated to stage four, with tumors spreading to her lung, liver and lymph nodes. Jones recorded seven albums with the Dap-Kings, but it was her exhilarating live shows, which functioned as equal parts Baptist church revival, Saturday night juke joint and raucous 1970s Las Vegas revue, that showcased the singer’s unparalleled energy. - Rolling Stone

Nice 2014 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Theatre de Verdure, Nice, France; July 10, 2014. Very good FM broadcast.

And now, for some sweet soul music… just head for the revival tent and experience the rapture!

The press blurb…

The renaissance of soul music in recent years has been fueled and ignited by a musical energy that has exploded out of a tightly knit family of musicians in Brooklyn, New York. In their many incarnations, these individuals help to create the dynamic roster of indie phenomenon Daptone Records. This stellar group of artists has gathered en masse and mounted busses to bring this dynamic show on the road.

Soul powerhouses Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings and Charles Bradley join forces with the afrobeat juggernaut Antibalas for a non-stop extravaganza featuring Master of Ceremonies Binky Griptite and special performances by the Sugarman 3 and Saun & Starr. Inspired by the high-energy Stax, Motown, and James Brown revues of the past… This is Soul Excitement!

  2. Sharon Jones survived cancer and glad she is recording and back on the road. This music at its best will convince you a treasure trove of soul classics were laying at the bottom of a Philadelphia or Chicago vault. Download or stream this if you like soul music at all - the sounds are alive and well!

  6. Charles Bradley and his band is simply brilliant. It was the last concert which I saw in the old Batschkapp (a famous Frankfurt/Germany venue which closed it´s doors later in the year, but re-opened under the same name in a different venue) and it was a memorable one, the best which I saw in 2013. The band was tight, funky, hot and then…Charles Bradley. You just have to witness him on stage, he is a volcano. If you don´t know his story you have to check it out. What fascinates me the most is that his material is instant classic soul stuff and he plays no covers on stage, only his own material. This man is raw talent !
