Glasgow 1988 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Glasgow Pavilion, Glasgow, Scotland; October 16, 1988. Very good FM broadcast.

Back in 1988, when Nanci Griffith had just released her second album on MCA, Little Love Affairs, she was still considered an “unknown”. Today, she is one of folk’s elder stateswoman.

Jack Hurst in the Chicago Tribune wrote when reviewing the album: “A folk-oriented artist on the periphery of the country mainstream, Nanci Griffith’s voice is a curious combination of fragility and astonishing power. Griffith’s songs, many of which she wrote, are serious ones, if not always readily accessible to the casual listener. Yet if they get your attention, they can have tremendous power. It’s essential, though, that Griffith’s arresting voice be given center stage… Griffith’s voice and vision deserve to get the listener’s full attention.”

At that time, some even considered Griffith’s vocals an acquired taste, “next to the likes of Reba McEntire and Patty Loveless.”

Wished Griffith had included the album’s opening track, Anyone Can Be Somebody’s Fool, in the setlist. After all, Little Love Affairs was released in February 1988 - and it was an immaculately crafted album, helmed by Tony Brown.
