Hamburg 2012 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Kampnagel, Hamburg, Germany; October 26, 2012. Excellent FM broadcast.

The ’70s soul is still quite apparent in his voice, with shades of Donny Hathaway and Bill Withers, but he’s also the vocal heir to Nat King Cole… a major talent, not just as a singer but also as a composer, with a unique, elliptical style, both for melodies and lyrics… -

The Brooklyn-based singer with the rich baritone and the ever-present Kangol hat is on a mission to revive old-school musical values… Possessed of massive vocal power offset by a rich tone and delicate control, his interpretations flit between jazz and soul, with the finesse of the former and strength of the latter in equal measure. - Mojo

Porter fuses jazz and soul better than anybody working these days… - Soul Tracks

Gregory Porter is a Grammy Award-winning American jazz vocalist, songwriter, and actor. Porter won the 2014 Grammy for best jazz vocal album, Liquid Spirit. Porter always wears a modified flat cap for public appearances. The reason for this is not entirely clear, but he has mentioned its role as a security blanket and refers to it as his “jazz hat.” In an interview with conducted by George W. Harris on November 3, 2012, when asked “what’s with the ubiquitous hat?” Porter replied, “I’ve had some surgery on my skin, so this has been my look for a little while and will continue to be for awhile longer. People recognize me by it now. It is what it is.” - wikipedia
