Holland 1985 [no label, 2CD]

Live at Buitensocieteit, Zwolle, Holland; November 7, 1985. Good audience recording - a bit trebly.

Thanks to taper Reel Records; the original uploader; and to 1nra1n8ow5 for keeping the show alive at Dime.

Original notes:

In 1985 I bought a ticket for the Utrecht show of Tom Waits. Then found out that he was also to play at the Vrijhof, Technical University Twente in Enschede: my (old) hometown. So I got a ticket for this show also. As the 1985 tour progressed and became more successful and also the demand for tickets… the Vrijhof concert was moved to another (larger) venue in Zwolle. I remember that I was flabbergasted by Tom’s concert, the music was great and his performance was…. Well, after this magical concert I got hold of any Tom Waits LP available within two-to-three weeks. Sound is very good (VG/EX to EX in the old days ratings).

Smok posted the following at smellthatharmonica.blogspot:

Waits had released Rain Dogs in August and spent October and November touring for the album. Waits played an astonishing amount of five shows in The Netherlands (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Nijmegen, Zwolle and Utrecht). The sound on this bootleg is pretty awesome… Enjoy this great show with a fantastic band… I mean this is his best band ever! The same that did the 1987 Frank’s Wil Years tour, documented in the Big Time video and album release.

Meanwhile, jackorose posted the following comment at Dime: “I should have waited for the sample but took the comment from the poster to believe it really is excellent. Listen bud, get the dam cotton out of your ears.”

Our response: The sibilance is indeed high for the vocals - a bit “trebly”. Could be due to position/location of the taper. You can hear how sharp are the “s” pronounced. This could be distressing since Waits’ attraction is his voice.

  2. I bought a ticket for the Frankfurt show of the 1985 tour. After we travelled from Switzerland to Frankfurt we found out that the concert was moved to a larger venue at the other end of town. So we have to find out where the venue was and arrived late. From our seats we could only see half of the stage. Tom’s performance seemed to be ok, the sound in the hall was rather bad.
23 years later at the Teatro degli Arcimboldi in Milan, Italy: From our seats on the balcony we enjoyed the ultimate Waits experience. A superb show.

  4. Big-O, thanx, & a request: Mark Ribot (guitarist) has certainly had an illustrious career and is way overdue for some solo love here: If there are any recordings from his recent “Los Postizos Cubanos” or Franz Casseus showcase performances, that’d be a serious heart-stopper.

    And… sibilance shmibilance.

This recording rates close to damn excellente for an 85 audience (believe me - the great majority out there is far worse)! Good balance on the instruments, minimal audience distraction, clear voice comprehension, which for Waits live, is a minor miracle. It don’t get much better for not being a SBD.

  5. hey bigo, i have two carla necessary monster shirts and only need one. i’m selling one on ebay. i’m putting this link under tom waits cause she did play on his album called alice, and he was on one of her albums by the book of knots called traineater. i do have traineater but not alice. i’m including some autographs and purple sharpie used to sign the flier.

tom waits fans are fans of her music and bands so i figure tom waits fans will see it if they have bought anything by him or doing searches on ebay and her fans will see it.

thanks for checking out the link! pass it on.
