Upper Darby, PA 2014 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Tower Theater, Upper Darby, PA; December 4, 2014. Fairly to very good audience recording.

Yusuf (Cat Stevens) Islam first tour in the US in 35 years!

Posted at rocknycliveandrecorded.com:

Yusuf Islam FKA Cat Stevens [66] learns from his mistakes. At the London Apollo a month ago at the start of the “Peace Train… Late Again” tour, Cat (which is what I’ll call him for this review) played a first set of hits, a second set of his new album, the blues-based Tell ‘Em I’m Gone, and a handful of oldies to take us home. By the time the Peace Train arrived at Philadelphia’s Tower Theatre, Cat had cut five songs off the new one and reworked the entire set into a career spanning testament not to faith (his wife got more shout outs than Allah) but to melody. This is what Cat does, he finds out…

So here we are in Philly because he couldn’t find a New York theatre willing to adhere to his no tickets policy… With a full band behind him, Cat commanded the stage with an off handed self-confidence which had the audience jumping up and down like izitsos and a seriously great set list, the show highlighted everything we loved and a couple of things we don’t love about him. It was the picture of soft rock, it lacked the rigorous rhythmic discipline of rock or the blues…

Cat can’t do anger, he can’t do sex (the girl is always sleeping beside him), he can’t rock, coming out of the same scene that brought us Graham Gouldman, he is great at pop rock and folk, piano ballads, a sort of spiritual yearning. It stops Cat from being one of the true greats, he has his limits. But within those limits he is a uniquely gifted songwriter with a voice so sweet it seems to always have a certain sadness on it and a master tune guy.

  2. evidently the dates were changed at the last minute and he ended up playing pa on the 4th instead of boston the date on this show would have been the 7th. originally the 7th was to be the ny show. all the dates are listed here altho this article is from back in sept.

the set lists for all the shows he did on this tour are here -

thank u for offering this. if it becomes possible however perhaps all the other songs that he did on this tour that werent played at this show would make fabulous filler. i would break the set differently to burn personally since its 110mins. id try to break around the 75-80min point and then fill in the 2nd cd with all the bonus trax.

  5. Where’s Yusuf’s most famous song: “Burn in Hell infidel Rushdie / and all your infidel family and publishers / for writing a book I haven’t read / and neither has the Imam who / in his infinite wisdom / sentenced you to death for writing that book / whatever it is which I won’t read because he said not to / and I wouldn’t understand it anyway / while I go ride my peace train to the moonshadows / where the children play / while morning has broken”

  11. I am once again reminded why it is best to not read comments and simply appreciate the music that moves me. And thank the host of this site for sharing such a wide variety of this artform for all of our enjoyment. If you don’t enjoy a post, then move on. There is *plenty* here for all of us. The religion of an artist really shouldn’t matter.

  14. Immediately following the September 11 attacks on the United States, he said:
I wish to express my heartfelt horror at the indiscriminate terrorist attacks committed against innocent people of the United States yesterday. It must be stated that no right-thinking follower of Islam could possibly condone such an action. The Qur’an equates the murder of one innocent person with the murder of the whole of humanity. We pray for the families of all those who lost their lives in this unthinkable act of violence as well as all those injured; I hope to reflect the feelings of all Muslims and people around the world whose sympathies go out to the victims of this sorrowful moment. He also donated a portion of his box-set royalties to the fund for victims’ families

    Islamaphobic redneck wanker say what?

  15. why does it take one to know one? i never understood the logic behind that statement?

btw.. there are extremists in most religions. ppl who follow any religion can be fine people. its the extremists that are the problem. and they are the problem in all religions including but not limited to muslims.

  16. Oh my name it ain’t nothin’, my age it means less
The country I come from is called the Midwest
I was taught and brought up there, all the laws to abide
And that land that I live in has God on its side

Oh the history books tell it, they tell it so well
The cavalries charged and the Indians fell
The cavalries charged and the Indians died
Oh the country was young with God on its side

Oh the Spanish-American war had its day
And the civil war too was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes I was made to memorize
With guns in their hands and God on their side

The first world war, boys, it came and it went
The reason for fighting I never could get
But I learned to accept it, accept it with pride
Now you don’t count the dead when God’s on your side

But now we got weapons of a chemical dust
If fire ‘em were forced to then fire them we must
One push of the button and a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions when God’s on your side

In a many dark hour I’ve been thinkin’ about this
That Jesus Christ was betrayed by a kiss
But I can’t think for you, you’ll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot had God on his side

So now as I’m leavin’, I’m weary as hell
The confusion I’m feelin’ ain’t no tongue can tell
The words fill my head and they fall to the floor
And if God is on our side, He’ll stop the next war

  17. lets not start arguing religion here it will only mess this place up, there will be no winners and plenty of losers.

  19. As the proud turd-dropper in the Yusuf fishbowl of peace and brotherly love, it’s my turn to dump! Firstly, it ain’t about religious choice. Catboy can convert to a voodoo potato salad with my blessing (–and why name yourself after your religion - never heard of a Norbu Buddah or a Jacob Jew. But I digress).

What it is about IS: mindlessly parroting the foaming delusions of some bearded butthole who dictated murder as a ticket to eternal bliss because he was offended by something he never examined. God is on the side of every human vermin who wants to prove his faith to the bigboy by slaughter, maiming, rape, and torture. Sing out Yusuf! Is the first cut the EASIEST?

Rushdie didn’t just wake up grouchy. He spent 10 years not knowing if morning had broken his skull with a bullet while Yusuf the Parrot sang songs of peace, brotherly love and advocated cold-blooded assassination.

Think about that while blissing to Peace Train. Better yet, READ “Joseph Anton”. One of the most extraordinary memoirs of courage, defiance and resilience ever.

  20. i dont think anyone is arguing religion here. it just seems that there is one among us who seems to hate cat stevens because he changed his name and became muslim. as they say ignorance is bliss.

By darth on Dec 19, 2014

  21. people can, and do, change, for both the better and worse. and then they can, and often do change again. who amongst us dare throw the first stone?

By rick on Dec 19, 2014

  22. as they say ignorance is bliss.

    By darth .

then you must be ecstatic because you are the most ignorant person here.

By lionel mapples son on Dec 20, 2014

  23. i dont hate cat stevens. i couldnt imagine hating someone because of their religious beliefs. all one needs to do is look at your comments to see that u do. your own words prove that u hate and have blind ignorance stemming from your hubristic arrogance. nothing i said here proves that i am ignorant. why should cat be banned from north america? can u explain that? can u explain anything u have said at all? i strongly doubt it.

  31. I saw the show last week in L.A. and it was simply brilliant. His religion made no difference with respect to the music he played. He seemed like a man extremely at peace with himself, so I have to think that Islam has been the catalyst for this

BTW, the show was a full-on lovefest between Yusuf/Cat and the audience. 7,700 people were ecstatic to finally have him back after so long, and the songs haven’t dated a bit. It’s a week after the show and I’m still thinking about it.

BTW, I’m an atheist who could give a hoot about the three major and million minor religions. It’s all a bunch of hogwash as far as I’m concerned (and I was raised Catholic, so I know from whence I write) but every once a while I meet a Christian or Jew who actually practices the good part of these faiths. Yusuf is a good example for Muslims. Anybody who wants to think he’s a “terrorist” is just a freaking nut, period.
