STEVIE WONDER
Toys for Children Benefit 2014 [no label, 3CD]

Live at the Fabulous Forum, Inglewood, CA; December 20, 2014. Very good audience recording.

Peter Larsen, ocregister.com:

“When ‘Songs in the Key of Life’ was out I didn’t do any sort of touring of it,” [Stevie Wonder] said a few minutes later, after the KJLH Gospel Choir had warmed up the crowd. “But as time has gone on it has been truly a journey in my life. I just thank God for giving me these 21 songs and all the experiences behind those songs”…

He turned serious again as he started into the opening instrumental riff of “Living for the City.” “We must use our hearts and our minds and love each other more,” Wonder said. “I hope someday I won’t have to sing this song.” Or maybe someday he can still sing this song - “Living for the City” is truly a magnificent and funky social critique - and know that the world has grown beyond that grim place he’d pictured in its lyrics.

Thanks to Scooter123 who recorded and shared the show at Dime.

Scooter123 noted:

Stevie Wonder doesn’t perform much anymore, but this year is the 39th anniversary of “Songs in the Key of Life,” so his usual Christmas Toy Benefit included a 3:04 rendition of “Songs in the Key of Life” played in its entirety including the 7″ bonus record released shortly after the double LP. This is a near-perfect audience recording with some slight crowd chatter, but some secret mojo sauce added to overide some of that. One last note - my first recording with the NBox upgrade, the NBox Platinum…

The true thanks go not to me, but to the taping community behind whose footsteps I have followed, including those who have perfected the art of stealth recordings, the makers of the stealthy mikes, cords, adapters, and preamps, and those who have graciously shared their recording techniques. I am merely a mike stand with a credit card and driver’s license.

  2. Saw this in Philly last month; truely a special experience. This is a great recording! Thanks to all the tapers and streamers for setting this music free. Happy New Year everyone. Let’s pray for peace in 2015.

  3. One of the greatest albums ever recorded, and Stevie won’t sing it or anything else in FL until this state changes its “Stand Your Ground” laws. I will enjoy this set of music as I have enjoyed SITKOL since I first heard it nearly 40 years ago. Thanks BigO, thanks Stevie. “Sir Duke” is one of the happiest songs ever recorded.

By Tony on Dec 31, 2014

  4. Stevie made a special point in Philly to ask the crowd if they thought that “there was a gun problem” in this country. It was by a show of hands (of course, Stevie is blind - so how was he going to see a show of hands?). Stevie then said “don’t worry, I’ll have someone tell me how you voted”. It was a funny, special moment. And yes, there is a gun problem in this country. Shoot first and ask questions later seems to be the way things go.

  5. >>>>”And yes, there is a gun problem in this country.”

    no there isn’t….!

there’s a lack of knowledge about guns in this country…!!!

    By Jerry's Finger on Jan 2, 2015

  6. there’s a lack of knowledge about guns in this country…!!!

Interesting comment, would you be kind enough to expand on it, I would be interested to find out more on your views .
Kind regards and a happy new year

By GMAL on Jan 2, 2015

  7. there’s nothing really to “expand” gmal…

long live the 2nd amendment of the U.S. constitution…!

you too have a great healthy new year…

    By Jerry's Finger on Jan 2, 2015

  8. O.K. thanks for clearing that up for me.
best wishes to you and yours

  9. Tell the woman whose 2 year old shot her to death that she simply has a lack of understanding about guns.

By Richard Sigberman on Jan 4, 2015

  10. 1. Waste of time, she won’t listen to you
    2. Guns don’t kill people, two year olds do
    3. If you gtee the right to arm bears then the Darwin principle is going to kick in.

By GMAL on Jan 4, 2015

  11. obvisiouly you don’t…you made my point because she knew what could happen…accidents do happen…she might’ve had the knowledge with the conceal & carry license but she didn’t have any common sense as a responsible owner nor as a parent…

do you feel bad for the child grieving family & the mother…? sure…so let’s go & outlaw all guns & get rid of the 2nd Amendment…or let’s go outlaw children 2 & under then huh…?

    By Jerry's Finger on Jan 4, 2015

  12. ^@Richard not directed towards you gmal…

    By Jerry's Finger on Jan 4, 2015

  13. With you on this one Jer.
It;s a crazy situation, but what are you gunna do, disarm all law abiding citizens and just leave guns in the hands of criminals and cops ?

By GMAL on Jan 4, 2015

  14. I hear ya gmal…

and to get back to Adams crazy comment above…

    >>>”Shoot first and ask questions later seems to be the way things go.”

no it’s not…put yourself in the law enforcements shoes just for a split second where a criminal is coming towards you with rage fighting for your gun or a gun pointed at you…unknowing what that person or persons are going to do…

what in the hell would you do in that situation…?

is 9 shots excessive…? sure…1or 2 probably would’ve got the job done but step into those shoes for that split second when the altercation occurred…

the lamestream politically correct media is the biggest culprit in most of these cases with criminals…yes criminals…!!!

what the hell are these kids thinking of what might the outcome could be…?

edify me on what you…or should a person do in the heat of battle so to speak where your life is in jeopardy…?

    By Jerry's Finger on Jan 4, 2015

  15. Guns are illegal in Japan and less than 30 people are killed by gun each year. Here in the US we kill over 30 people by gun EVERY DAY!! But you know, “there’s nothing we can do”….certainly not universal background checks, certainly not outlawing semi automatic weapons….those wouldn’t help at all…

By Big Dave on Jan 12, 2015

  16. How many legal gun owner’s stopped the shooters of the San Bernardino massacre? None.
How many legal gun owner’s stopped the shooters of the Columbine massacre? None.
    Colorado movie theater massacre? None.
    Sandy Hook School massacre? None.
    McDonalds massacre? None.

Do I need to go on? More guns in the hands of everybody IS NOT the answer or solution.
The ONLY solution is strict gun control!!

I’d site every country on earth that has strict gun control as models of places where massacre’s are non-existant.

By SloppyJoe on Dec 21, 2015

  17. I have strong opinions about guns, too, but I’m not going to express them here.

How ’bout we get back to talking about Stevie Wonder’s awesome music before this turns into another endless rant thread like the Corey M debacle a little while ago?

    Just a thought…

By Willis on Dec 22, 2015

  18. Thanks, BIGO for the awesome Stevie Wonder music!

By Willis on Dec 22, 2015

  19. After decades of gun control, murders in Detroit hit new record high. I guess the criminals just bypass the strict gun control laws.

By Deadwing on Dec 22, 2015

  20. Willis is right.Stevie wonder is awesome and all that need to be discussed here.

By sluggo on Dec 22, 2015

  21. Hey DeadW, while fondling your little gun barrel tonite, suck on this:

  22. @SloppyJoe - RE: San Bernadino - The gentleman who ID’d the murderers’ license plate was armed. If he wasn’t armed, he would not have approached the gunfire. This may have helped stop further murders. PEACE…
