EMMYLOU HARRIS & BUDDY MILLER
Love Hurts [no label, 1CD]

Live in Baden-Baden, Germany. October 31, 2000. Very good soundboard.

Emmylou Harris might have gotten some notice with her 1970 debut album, Gliding Bird, but in the ’70s, she was better known for her work with Gram Parsons and the latter’s band, The Fallen Angels. Since Parsons’ death in 1973, Harris has moved on and is now very much an artiste and a star in her own right.

Recognised as one of the finest American country singers, Harris is also a fine interpreter of other musician’s songs and is not one to let that “country” tag be a hindrance to her work. Opening the show with two tracks fresh from her then-new album, Red Dirt Girl (released September 2000), Harris also showed how confident she was with her own material. While the album won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 2001, listening to The Pearl and Michelangelo, one can also imagine Harris teaming up with Nanci Griffith since the songs have a Nanci Griffith feel to them.

Apart from songs from Red Dirt Girl - including her Elvis “tribute”, Boy From Tupelo (”this next song is inspired by Elvis Presley… sort of”), Harris also covers Gram Parsons’ Love Hurts and Hickory Wind and Daniel Lanois’ Deeper Well. Throughout, Harris is ably supported by guitarist Buddy Miller, bassist Darryl Johnson and drummer Brian Blade. And for those who think that country should not be straightjacketed as a genre, there’s a wah-wah guitar on I Don’t Want To Talk About It Now.

  7. A small note - ‘Love Hurts’, although covered by Gram Parsons, was written by Boudleaux and Felice Bryant, and ‘Deeper Well’ was written by David Olney.

    Thanks again.
