Melbourne 2015 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Hamer Hall, Melbourne, Australia; March 6, 2015. Fairly to very good audience recording.

In February 2014, Neneh Cherry released, Blank Project, her first album of solo music in 18 years. The album also featured synth/drum duo RocketNumberNine.

Michelle Griffin, The Sydney Morning Herald:

She’s still raw like sushi, Neneh Cherry: a post-punk diva in adidas and heavy metal jewellery who shakes it with an edge that would make Beyonce sit down and take notes. Hamer Hall is an odd fit for Cherry’s propulsive mix of trip-hop mothering and afro-beat attitude, but she made it work, delivering one of the more joyous celebrations the room had ever seen…

March 6 was Cherry’s Melbourne debut, a quarter of a century after her first album was released, but our patience was rewarded. Her voice is still a supple instrument, soaring for the soul choruses before she switches to a casual, precise rap or an art-punk volley. She was backed by an unassuming pair of English brothers known as RocketNumberNine, Ben Page on electronics and Tom Page on drums…

While she opened with groovy lullaby Across the Water, she also spat out Blank Project, a wild stampede of entwined love and hate, and incendiary club track Weightless. In a bleak highlight, Spit Three Times, she exorcised the black dog of grief for her late mother.

But even the darkest tracks were upsold by Cherry’s streetwise delivery and voodoo moves. She saved til encore the song that made her name and pretty much reprogrammed pop for the next two decades, Buffalo Stance. The live version drops the high hat for a slow, sinuous backbeat but is still a juicy a call to arms.
