Reel Masters [Big Daddy, 2CD]

Various studio locations 1971; live Soundboard material August 22, 1971; June 29, 1972; July 23, 1972. Very good audio.

Thanks to jswetch for sharing the tracks at Dime.

jswetch noted:

This was a boot on the “Big Daddy” label. It’s a strange hodge podge of really good quality soundboard live material from this Beck Group and alternate studio versions from the Rough and Ready sessions. To me, that’s the real draw of this. The two albums that Beck did with this band are my all-time favorite material from him, and this is a great chance to hear some different versions of just about all of the songs from the Rough and Ready release, plus two versions of an unreleased track called July 13th.

Only the album closer, Jody, is not here. Rayne’s Park Blues was what Max’s Tune was called on the LP version of this I bought when it was first released. Somewhere along the line it was re-named Max’s Tune, and that’s what it’s been labeled as on later LP pressings and all of the CD issues of this material.

Some of these songs are fairly similar to what you’re familiar with from Rough and Ready, but all have something different, whether it’s Cozy Powell’s bass drum pattern, Max Middleton’s comping, Bob Tench’s vocal, Clive Chaman’s feel or fills, Beck’s wah wah rhythm pattern or solo, or an altogether different feel or performance.

This studio material apparently came from tape reels of the sessions that Cozy Powell owned. These surfaced as a five-CD set (one for each reel) on a Japanese bootleg label. That set went for a ridiculous price, and is not widely available. This two-CD set that I’m liberating has one disc containing all or almost all from these Cozy reels, and another disc of really good live material that’s probably been up here in one form or another before. All together, it’s a great listen and a great snapshot of Beck in one of his more overlooked eras.

  8. i dont have the 5 cd set. everyone has the full paris theater show of course but the full roundhouse set would be nice to have and who wouldnt want that full finland set? there are very very few live performances out there of anyone of worth from finland and even less that are sbd. what there is has been tv or fm sourced. i wonder if this was brdcst. any studio outtakes rehearsals demos etc of beck pre 84 or so.. is highly desirable.

  12. while not beck related i wanted to bring attn to this item -

its the alternate to cant u hear me knockin that will be one of the new sticky fingers deluxe release. and evidently there will be a clapton collaboration on brown sugar. woohoo!!!!

in other in memoriam news.. 35 yrs ago today tommy caldwell of marshall tucker band died. pout.
but this past weekend ann wilson of heart got married. how nice.
and sabbath has a new cd coming next year and a series of final dates to follow.
and jeff tweedy has a new album coming with richard thompson producing it!!!! sometimes producers arent that obvious on the albums they produce. but when richard is on an album as producer.. u know it. and even if u arent that big of a fan of the artist in question.. its almost as if the producer is one of the musicians and sometimes he is.. on said album.

on a separate note.. i havent seen the first 2 bad co reissues from this month that have bonus material. has anyone gotten them yet? have u seen them posted anywhere?

  15. The rest of this sounds great, but the last track, 211, sounds like a bad disc transfer to me. It’s an extremely annoying sound. It basically sounds like someone is scraping sandpaper over the microphone back and forth. and I am just playing the track direct from this web. Do any of you hear it?

  20. Hello JH, I hear it as well. It sounds like that particular file (211) is corrupt. Or, like you mentioned, it could be a bad DAT or CD transfer. Well, until another cleaner/clearer one comes along, I guess it’s the best we have for now. All the best to you!

By eponymus on Apr 29, 2015

  24. u dont have to be mind readers. just because i post a comment doesnt mean u have to comment on top of it. not everything i say needs your response. and what i said was obvious. u dont need to look for holes. clearly i meant officially released. i specifically said it will be on the new sticky fingers deluxe release. then i linked to it. thats the actual official released version of it in advance. not a bootleg copy of it. its obvious that i didnt speak of a copy of a song that we’ve all heard for many years. youre picking and choosing what to see in my postings and then telling me u dont read minds. if i left out part of what i meant thats a different story. but thats not what happened. i didnt leave anything out. u just chose to ignore what i said and act like i didnt say it. wtf is wrong with u??
and btw.. contrary to what ppl have told u on here.. my name isnt glen. if u are addressing me.. its darth. i dont call u by any other name whether it be your real name or not. or a name that people claim is your name. my name has never been and isnt glen.

  29. btw… clapton is doing 2 shows at mad square garden in nyc. this fri and sunday. those are the only 2 shows he is doing in north america this year. after that he is doing 7 shows from the 14th thru the 23rd at the royal albert hall. thats all hes doing. tickets for the ny shows range from $80 to 500 plus fees. the line up includes -
    Eric Clapton – guitar, vocals
    Chris Stainton – piano, keyboards
Paul Carrack - organ, keyboards, vocals
    Nathan East – bass
    Steve Gadd – drums
    Michelle John – backing vocals
    Sharon White – backing vocals
    opening the show is -
Andy Fairweather Low & The Low Riders
these shows are in honor of his 70th birthday exactly one month ago.
the last show to date that eric has done was 6-28-14 at MOSiR Stadium Oswiecim Poland.
EC’s final concert of 2014 was a headling slot at the Oswiecim Life Festival. He dedicated the concert to Bobby Womack, who passed away the day before.
the band he used was quite different last year from the one he is using this year.
i wouldnt mind getting a copy of this show above from poland if possible. i do have the audio of the video of the middle / far east tour that he released. its of course fabulous. i highly recommend that if any of u dont have that.
and i would absolutely love to get a copy of one or both of the 2 shows coming up this weekend. hint hint.

  33. Stop the Darth bashing. It’s really tedious. I am a frequent visitor / commenter at BigO and I find that your little snarky tribe of haters needs to grow up and gat a damned life. Darth sometimes posts interesting comments, but always posts because he enjoys the community here. As for YOUR reasons for posting, well, perhaps YOU should examine your motives.

By walter on May 6, 2015

  34. ty vm walter. theyre not going to listen. in fact all u will do is redirect their attn towards yourself for a minute.

hey did u notice that there isnt a single fm / sbd beck/clapton show from any of the performances they did together? not one single show was brdcst or got out even in bits. not one single track even. there have been a hell of a lot of shows from every single ec tour without exception to show up in sbd quality. but not that tour with beck. wonder why.

By darth on May 6, 2015

  35. Darth, I was lucky enough to attend Beck/Clapton at MSG. My only thought was that perhaps it was never issued because EC couldn’t muster the same energy and power that JB still wields every night…..or

Was it also around the time that Jeff was changing management……or

    They have different recording contracts……or

    Who knows?

You’re right, there were lots of audience tapes on this site from the Japan, London and NYC dates - but no SBD. There are also no commercial DVDs from that tour, even though Jeff puts some commercial video or CD out frome almost every tour these days.

By walter on May 8, 2015

  36. EC couldn’t muster the same energy and power that JB still wields every night…

i would substitute the words talent and creativity for energy and power.

By walter on May 9, 2015

  38. there is a sbd or fm or tv brdcst of every single tour and often more than one that eric has done since 74 without exception. im not talking about officially now. im talking about in collectors circles. im sure that his crew did some recording from the board at some if not all of the shows that he did with beck. that not one single one of these has leaked out is a little shocking. there are quite a bunch of performances that i have found from the 80s and 90s and 00s etc. that i would never have expected to show up that there really is no reason for them to exist other than for the fact that someone close to the circle leaked the recordings. this being said.. thats why i am surprised that of all the shows that ec and jb did during those 2 tours.. or at least 2 legs.. i have 2 t shirts that are very different so it seems like 2 separate tours. that not one single show or even individual sets by either musician has come out from the sbd. none were brdcst either fm or tv. not one surfaced from ald source. nothing.
yes nowadays every show on the planet is recorded from the audience by someone. even if not always worth listening to. but if one is a collector of sbd / fm / tv audios etc. as i am.. its just a point i was making. thats all.

i made this point also about dylan. there are either none or nearly no sbd or fm recordings of full dylan shows.. since the mid 80s. i am not looking thru my collection but other than a couple of the petty tour and the dead tour after that wembley 84 show with santana and mick taylor.. theres very little out there that came from the sbd. to be a little more specific.. how about since the bobfest at the garden.
its 23 years ago or so isnt it? how many sbds or fms do we have since that event of him? now im not talking about 1-5 song clips when he appeared on letterman or farm aid etc.

By darth on May 9, 2015

  39. why glen do you think you’re entitled to a sbd source copy…?

once again you are wrong about your bobness information…

    hawaii apr ‘92…

    great woods sept ‘93…

there is the complete supper club sbd from nov ‘93…

    Monterey, ca may ‘95…

    Irvine plaza nyc dec ‘97…

    San Jose may ‘98…

    Eugene or Jun ‘99…

that great ald source from Atlanta feb ‘02…

    rothbury, mi matrix from ‘09…

there are several bob sbds avail since mid 80’s so quit lying spreading false information asshole clown…

again why do you think you or the public is entitled to a sbd fm source copy from bd EC or JB or for that matter from any performer…?

just enjoy what you have or can get hold of…

my god glen you are pathetic…!

    By Jerry's Finger on May 9, 2015

  40. again my name isnt glen. and i didnt say anything about being entitled to anything. u are altering what i said and twisting things i said to suit your purposes. i dont need some idiot to tell me to enjoy what i can get hold of. who the fuck are u? isnt it pathetic to do what u do? if not.. why not? wtf is wrong with u?
i dont buy that the 9 items over the 30 yr period u came up with are all sbd items. but if they are.. that leaves 22 yrs without any representation whatsoever in fm or sbd quality. thats several 100 shows not leaked at all. and no.. im not wrong about it. u just dont know how to read. u chose to twist what i said and act like i said one thing when i said something else. i didnt lie and i didnt spread false info at all. look carefully at what i said. none or nearly none is still true. there is none for 22 years out of the 30 from 1985 to 2015. wow!!! thats siphened down to 6.5 out of 7.5 right that theres nothing representing anything he did from the sbd or brdcst. again.. assuming that 100% of what u claim above is accurate. if u are wrong on any of the above.. then the % is even worse against u. i didnt say that i nor the public is entitled to anything. i merely pointed out that these recordings dont happen to be out there. the supper club was done for a brdcst and parts of 2 shows were combined for a tv airing so the audio of the video was used for a bootleg. and someone eventually leaked one or both of the full sets also. there may have actually been 4 sets and not all of those made it out in sbd did they?
i dont know if 100% of all the items u list are complete.. which is what i said also. not snippets mind u. i sure havent seen all of those items as complete sbds. i dont think u have either. many items are often listed as sbds that arent but they sound so nice that ppl think they are.
