1984-1995 Compilation Disc 9 - Demos, Live and Outtakes [no label, 1CD]

Live at First Ave, Minneapolis, MN; January 20, 1992. Fairly to very good audience recording. MTV Unplugged, NYC; Outtakes -April 21, 1993.

Sometimes, all you need is just one song. With Runaway Train, Soul Asylum got the jangle rock breakthrough that has eluded both The Replacements and Paul Westerberg. Such is the vagaries of fate!

Some time back, a fan-made Soul Asylum 1984-1995 Compilation, comprising eight audio CDs and two DVDs, was shared. We only have Disc 9.

Release notes:

After hearing hundreds of hours of live shows and collecting them for 20 years, it was time to put this together and get it to the fans. Soul Asylum used to be called “The Best Live Band In America” and this will let you see and hear why. It also shows how ahead of their time the band was.

In making this set I tried to pick shows and songs for these reasons.

Year it was recorded
Historic value
Overall playing of the band
Sound quality

Some songs have been re EQ and volume added. Others have not been touched. All coming from the lowest generation of the sources that could be found. Both of the DVDs in this set have had better audio added to them for better enjoyment. This set would not be possible without other collectors such as Raquel F.

  2. First Ave is one of the best venues I have ever been too–in the brief time I lived in Minneapolis, I saw Garbage, Ray Davies, Low, Richard Thompson, The Zombies, Interpol, Animal Collective, Dandy Warhols, Built to Spill, Neko Case, and lots of others there. Other than the rancid taste (and smell) of Grain Belt beer, it is an amazing place.
