Amsterdam 1985 [no label, 1CD]

Bad Moon Rising European Tour #1. Live at the Melkweg, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; March 31, 1985. Fairly to very good audience recording.

Thanks to kneesfudd for sharing the show at Dime.

Picture of Sonic Youth circa 1985 by James Welling, posted on the net - Thanks!

kneesfudd noted:

- Delightfully fine stereo AUD.
- Warts: ALMOST NONE. Tapeflip/song cut end of #6 carefully spliced. Most everything else repaired including taper volume adjustments, channel imbalances & a few dropouts at start o’ tape.

Recording Information: Sony TC-D5M portable stereo cassette recorder with Sony ECM-33 electret condenser stereo microphone > master stereo cassette.
Playback 199?: master stereo cassette on Nakamichi CR-7 cassette deck (azimuth adjusted) > CD-R > CD-R.
Playback 2014-06-28: master AUD CD-R clone  > EAC -Y wavs  > Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, NO equalisation]  > CD Wave (track splits)  > flacs (Trader’s Little Helper)

Comparison with quality differences & remastering notes: This master tape clone seemed slightly better quality than bobfather’s unknown generation, with less dropouts at the start for one thing. Then twas improved greatly by fixing major phase offset/channel misalignment (about 50 cents off between channels!) due to mike placement I reckon (methinks the taper was too close!). The phase wandered some, so twas fixed in increments thru the recording & ’tis way better but it ain’t perfect. Also, this version is 2 minutes longer at the same speed, but it seems to be mostly inbetween song noise at end of #6. There were some taper volume adjustments accounted for in several places & overall channel level differences were evened out & a bit of tinkering was done as one channel mostly had lower volume. Speed (pitch) at start of set checked out perfectly with spectrum analysis so twas left in peace.

  3. I taped this show. I still have the master cassette in clear condition. My voice can be heard at the beginning of the 1st song when i was speaking to my friend next to me: “Ben je dat vergeten mr. Radio Man? Recorded with Sony Walkkman WMD6 and audiotechnica mikes, as I remember well. Some of my tapes can be found on Internet Archives Whispering Muse. Beck and Jayhawks in the Melkweg are great shows and very good recordings.

    Kind greetings,
