West Hollywood 2015 [JEMS Master , 1CD]

Live at The Roxy, West Hollywood, CA; May 28, 2015. Fairly to very good audience recording.

Today (May 28, 2015), U2 performed a special concert at the Roxy club in West Hollywood. This show was arranged to make up for U2’s cancelled appearance at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas last December. U2 had not played a full set at a venue this small since the All That You Can’t Leave Behind promo tour, when they did three club dates: October 19, 2000 at the Manray, Paris; December 5, 2000 at Irving Plaza, New York; and February 7, 2001 at the Astoria, London. The audience for this show comprised KROQ contest winners as well as celebrities including Judd Apatow, Colin Farrell, Kate Hudson, Tom Morello, Aaron Paul, Sean Penn and Kevin Smith.

As Rnbbird said at Dime: “How on earth did you get in? I am glad you did - thanks!”

For the collectors out there…

Thanks to the JEMS family; BK and big for sharing the show at Dime.

Here it is. And yes, it was everything any one of us would have hoped it to be: our favorite band, in a 500 person club, playing unadorned by visual technology and giving it their all for an hour of expected and unexpected material. At times it was a bit surreal to see U2 in this setting, so close to the crowd, playing a setlist that nodded to the very first tours where venues of this size were the norm.

All the details you could ever want about the show can be found here:

As for the recording, the PA at the Roxy is spread wide left and right of stage. I used cardioids to help fight off what I knew would be a noisy crowd and I was standing pretty much dead center. But the highly directional nature of the mics combined with the positioning to the PA meant that when I moved slightly (and as much as I tried to stay steady, I did move, wouldn’t you?), the high end of the stereo image shifts. The impact is heard almost entirely in the cymbals, which flitter between channels in spots (cymbals may also have been split left/right in the PA). It is noticeable, more so in headphones, but not terribly annoying. Ce la vie. I did the best I could.

That demerit aside, the tape is punchy, clear, full and I think accurately captures what happened in the room.

Once it was announced the show would NOT be broadcast, we did feel obliged to all of you to get in there and record. We hope you enjoy it.

And by we, I mean the extended JEMS family. J went through the entire show yesterday painstakingly removing closer clapping during music to make for a more palatable listening experience. And BG was also quick to raise a hand and volunteer to take this one the last mile. Thanks to both of them.

  2. 6 old songs out of 12.. not bad. pity there isnt a where the streets or bad or i still havent found. the more songs pre or from joshua tree the better. after that album they went down hill. i know they have way more fans now than they ever did prior to rattle and hum but that was the turning point. sure there are moments i spoze from 1990 on that they touched on decent songwriting but not like they did prior to that. they used to be one of the greatest bands of all time. now? eh

  3. was Job Hunter.
It has been 30 years since I was at the Roxy for a new wave concert. Very good memories. But has anyone else here been there? 500 people seems to be much more than I remembered it being possible. There were a lot of tables and chairs back then, not so much open space for standing.

  4. Darth was cleaning the toilets at The Roxy when Bono’s head popped up and told him that “spoze” is not a word.

  5. Maybe he meant “spooze”. His is always over me.

  6. The new songs sound good live, and I’m glad they didn’t lean too heavily on the hits. “Joshua Tree” got a lot of airplay, and I was glad to see that they avoided that record, although “In God’s Country” is still a favorite of mine. I think the best songs on “Achtung Baby” (”One,” “Mysterious Ways”) are as good or better than “I Still Haven’t Found,” or “Where The Streets Have No Name,” but obviously that’s a matter of individual preference. I wasn’t there, so thank you for sharing, Big O!

  7. Saw the May 22 show in PHX. Absolutely amazing! Nice to hear a stripped down show. Seriously though, if you like this band you must go and see this show. The audio is superb and the video screen is revolutionary for a rock show. Check their official sight for what I mean. Plus, the pre-show muzak is centered around the other bands who started in the late-70’s to early-80’s. Quite the musical lesson for my 18-yr old daughter.

  8. U2 would be crushed to know that some dil-hole (darth) on the internet doesn’t like them.

  9. Sally: not just Darth, but everybody else on the planet, including u2. The best things these prima donna arena blands (pun intended) can do, is work the small rooms again, to actually come in contact with people. The stones seemed to realize that some years back, but that was then. These days they’re just a travelling musical circus act. yawn.

  10. u2 was an incredible band from 77 thru joshua tree. and it has nothing to do with the internet altho most ppl are on the net now and they do come into contact with a lot of their fans. i met the band 100s of times from 81 thru 95. and they are always very interested in hearing what their fans have to say. they go on radio and tv shows to have fans call in and talk to them. they do care. they communicate with their fans. not only me but yes including me. when bands play massive stadiums like these guys do it isnt for no reason at all. theres a separation there. a sort of invisible wall that makes it so that they dont have to really see the audience. 50 or 90000 faces blend together and theres really no one there because theres so many there. theres a big difference in small rooms than massive stadiums or arenas. look at the wall that roger waters tried to explain to everyone since 79. he hasnt been able to get away from it like oldfield cant get away from tubular bells. ha. but the point of the wall is the essence of my argument here. around the time u2 started to play arenas in 84/85 is when they started to lose it. sure the music was still there til 87 and that 87 tour which lasted til 89 was the end of it. there was no turning back after that.
so no.. its not only my opinion.. it is a huge amount of them out there. i just happen to be the one who expressed it here. but i do still love their early stuff. the key to not letting stuff get over played like the songs i mentioned.. is to not over play them.

  11. When it comes to genuine audience connection, no one comes close to Iggy Pop. Even in his SIXTIES, he still took stage dives into the arms of his audience and not only invited, but DEMANDED they join him dancing and singing on stage. You think Jagger would even let an errant spider share his stage without being squashed by a roadie?

By Happy Camper on Jun 7, 2015

  12. believe it or not in this approx 15 date tour the stones are doing theyre actually gonna film some of the performances and release another live dvd. like the one from a couple of years ago wasnt enough. this one obviously wont even have the draw of mick taylor and the special guests that the last one had. and theyre evidently doing another album. i didnt even wanna read the article long enough to care about if it was a studio one or live one to go along with the dvd. if any band ever existed for the sole purpose of cashing in without regards for the fans…

By darth on Jun 7, 2015

  13. personally if i was going to get any of the stones perfs.. id like to get hold of some of those club gigs.
btw….i got a copy of the sndbrd of the jacksonville fl who show from april 9th 2 months ago. i dont know if there are other shows on this tour that are becoming available.. but omg.. the who are one of my fave bands ever.. but u know that adage about bands that should call it quits? speaking of the stones.. if u happen to get your hands on the who item i just described.. and i am not offering the link since no one seems to care one way or the other when i do cept for the one thank u for the knopfler i got.. and youre welcome of course.. u will probably agree that the who should give up now. the band sounds horrible and rogers voice is shot. the worst show pre 84 didnt sound this bad.
