ERIC BURDON
(Tovarich Band)
Springfield 1971 [no label, 1CD]

Live in Springfield, IL (unknown venue); December 10, 1971. Fairly to very good soundboard.

Thanks to kingrue for sharing the show at The Traders’ Den.

kingrue noted:

Okay folks, this has to be one of the most rare and unique tapes I’ve had the pleasure to spin and listen to. There is very little information about this time period of Eric’s career.

The story goes that a few tapes were pulled from Burdon’s collection and sold by guitarist John Sterling and were distributed by a Hollywood company back in the late ’80s. I had never heard anything from this time period before and had to do some research on this. I was only able to find one other show documenting this short-lived band.

A little back story on the time frame leading up to this performance. On February 5, 1971 Eric finally left his band in the middle of their European tour, allegedly due to exhaustion. After returning home and taking time off, Eric started working on his next album titled “Guilty” during the summer with Jimmy Witherspoon. Deciding to take this new group of musicians on the road and call themselves “Tovarich”.

The word “Tovarich” is Russian and translates into “Comrades”. The lineup for this band only existed for a few months, they also provided the soundtrack to the movie “Revenge of the Cheerleaders”. I read that Burdon and Witherspoon played seven consecutive Mondays at the Whiskey in 1971 sometime in July; before recording the Guilty! LP (aka Black and White Blues).

As I was transferring this tape I noticed that side B had extra tracks at the end of the tape. After more research, I found it to be two songs from one of the previous Whiskey A Go Go shows. There is a double liberated CD that contains songs from various Whiskey A Go Go shows. I was able to compare the two extra tracks I had and they are the same as the liberated release.

This recording should spark interest in a wide variety of collectors, even if you’re just a casual fan, this is pretty cool stuff. While listening to the guitar playing, I swear this guy is heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix. A big Thank You goes out to TTD resident Philippes for sending his tapes all the way from France.

  4. final song is now 17′34 if anyone is keeping track. making the 2nd item from the whisky a go go 21′10 in total. the first section is 68mins assuming the lengths are all accurate as given. so now this is 89mins. it no longer fits on a cd. but.. thank u soooo much for this item. it is killer.

By darth on Jun 3, 2015

  5. huh?
what in the world are you talking about?
don’t you know 1+1= 3 in darths warped mind with everything.
you now have just entered darths twilight zone.

  6. whats the problem?

By darth on Jun 3, 2015

  7. darth

According to the original torrent, the last two songs:
    11 Stop What You’re Doing
    12 Be Mine

    Total Time = 12:31 min

It’s likely you’ve got a corrupted download somewhere. You might want to retake the last two tracks again.

    By bigozine2 on Jun 3, 2015

  8. ty bigo.. evidently what happened is it downloaded after u fixed it twice in the same file. i jumped the gun too quickly when u fixed the file names and the final file itself. so my dl of track 12 became exactly twice as long as it really is. i listened to it and at exactly the 8′47 point it started again. never had that happen before. so its that much shorter now than it was. haha. back to cd length ha! ty

  9. hmmm.
    sound familiar darth?
    you have a corrupt file.
sort of like those corrupt files with viruses.
that you so willingly like to promote with links.
    idiot.
    what is wrong with you?

By darth the timekeeper on Jun 4, 2015

  10. it wasnt corrupt. it was duplicated twice within itself. the original upload was faulty. i brought it to the attention of bigo. they fixed it. a file i have offered here on this site wouldnt suddenly without explanation develop a virus. that isnt possible. a virus is a program. it would have to be executable. or i would have to lead to a page with one on it. and all my links only lead to articles unless its to a download of music. such as the knopfler concerts. u cant get a virus in an mp3. it is not possible. i never link to an executable file ever. i never link to a site that has anything on it such as scr files or dll’s or exe’s or bat’s or com’s or anything that could possibly give u or anyone a virus. regardless what u claim. a corrupt file such as u are trying to describe couldnt do this either. it would have to intentionally be written to become a virus. most of these sorts of things are adware or spyware or malware. usually not just adware btw.
u will never get a virus in a txt or mp3 or avi or mov file or any file like that. a virus has to be something that is executable. scr files are the ones of late that are being sent out thru email and they run as if they are part of your screensaver program. they arent exactly viruses but they are often info grabbers. no one should ever have any real reason to send u this type of file and u shouldnt have any need to dl this sort of file. u wont get a virus in a jpg or any pic file or music or video type file. it wont ever happen. it has never happened in the history of computing. anyone who thinks it has.. is an idiot.
the links i have sent out.. without any exception whatsoever.. are all either articles to the various newsletters usually ultimate classic rock but not exclusively since i subscribe to 2 others as well. they are not downloads. they are just online newsletters with articles that u can read. nothing to download and nothing that there is any danger in going to those sites. the other links i have offered have been music downloads that i downloaded myself first.. such as the knopfler concerts from dublin and manchester and the 2010 1996 and 2013 shows i offered in the previous week. none of them are dangerous at all and 100% of them were soundboard recordings. i dont know why u are trying to mislead people here about my links. ive been on here over a decade and there is no truth at all whatsoever to your lies.

By darth on Jun 4, 2015

  11. ive been on here over a decade !

trophy time? this isn`t your site no one cares if you have been here ten minutes or ten years you cretin. now shut up.

  12. youre missing the point idiot. but why am i not surprised?!

By darth on Jun 4, 2015

  13. Again, darth, we’re all ready to accept your apology when you’re ready to man up and offer it.

By Willis on Jun 4, 2015

  14. again willis… apologize for?
    are u apologizing to me?

By darth on Jun 4, 2015

  15. Thanks Big O. I was 16 and living in Springfield, Illinois when this recording was done. I don’t remember him coming to town and I doubted the location. (There are at least 24 non-cartoon Springfields in the USA w/4 in Wisconsin). But at the tail of track 10 the MC thanks the Armory for letting them go long. That’s where a concert would have been if it wasn’t during the State Fair so thanks, now I get to go to the show.

By Pierre on Jun 4, 2015

  16. well a state fair wouldnt have been in december thats for sure.

By darth on Jun 4, 2015

  17. No one said that there was, pork belly.

By dartharama on Jun 4, 2015

  18. Winter state fair anyone?
    http://wyomingstatewinterfair.org/

By dropkick sarge on Jun 4, 2015

  19. SPI had lots of cold weather concerts at the state fair grounds. Inside the “Illinois” building where the pies and quilts and the butter cow would be, I saw a blazing Canned Heat show.

By Pierre on Jun 4, 2015

  20. but this concert wouldnt have been during a state fair in december.
and the above wyoming fair isnt a state fair.. theres a very big difference between a state fair and what u linked to. good try tho. wyoming’s state fair will be aug 8th thru 15th this year.

  21. darth falls for everything.so serious misterserioso ! state fair fail HAHAHA

    By real 17 on Jun 4, 2015

  22. i didnt fall for anything. drop isnt very intelligent. he has some mental issues and believed the state fair in wy was in winter. someone had to explain it to him. much of the time i am serious yes. not always. once again and im not surprised here. u are missing the point. isnt it past your bedtime.

By darth on Jun 4, 2015

  23. So much for darth acting like a grown-up and apologizing for being such a jerk.
    Oh, well, I tried.

By Willis on Jun 4, 2015

  24. u didnt set an example yourself there willis. and i didnt catch your apology. why is it u dont see what youre doing as acting like a jerk? if u really tried we would have all seen that apology from u. funny how that works huh?

By darth on Jun 4, 2015

  25. Sigh. Forget it darth. Just go back to your usual trolling for attention.

By Willis on Jun 4, 2015

  26. Darth;
    Good work. Keep it up!

By Dubious on Jun 4, 2015

  27. u keep saying forget it but u keep bringing it up. im not the one trolling for attention.. u are. and as i said to that other idiot.. claiming im the one seeking attention is one thing but giving it to me is an entirely different thing. i didnt ask for it. u keep coming out from under your rock to join in on them bandwagons every chance u see an opportunity. dont u?

By darth on Jun 4, 2015

  28. I saw Eric Burdon with Jimmy Witherspoon
in Augsburg, Germany. It must have been in 1973 and in fact: the guitar player looked like a young Jimi Hendrix and played like him!

By Peter on Jun 4, 2015

  29. Thank you BigO. This is a real treat.

Does darth have any friends? Must be lonely having only himself to spend the amount of time he/she does posting these bragging rants. And he’ll respond to this too because it wants attention or feels a needing to protect this portrayal. Sad life you now reside in… I may check back on the comment or I most likely won’t.

    Jump boy jump.

By datdemdar on Jun 4, 2015

  30. i dont sit around wondering if u have friends. why do u do that about me? why do i have rent free space in your head? look at the posts above mine when u make claims about mine. i didnt brag about anything btw. why is it ok for u to post about me but not ok for me to post in response? where is your logic? isnt your post based on mine? why is that ok?? how come u arent wanting attention when u post this shit above but when i post its me wanting attention? how exactly does that work? i feel the need to protect but dont u feel the need to antagonize harass attack instigate etc? explain why its ok to feel your needs but mine arent ok? why is it a sad life when u say so but when one looks at what u are doing with yours thats not sad? if your life revolves around harassing someone else about theirs it seems to me thats truly sad. im betting u will check back for why would u have posted this comment in the first place?
