THE ROCHES/THE BE GOOD TANYAS - KCRW 1995/2003

June 20, 2015 – 5:23 am

MAGGIE ROCHE R.I.P. 1951-2017

Maggie Roche, the folk-rock singer-songwriter who since the mid-1970s had performed and recorded as a trio and in pairs with her two sisters, Terre and Suzzy, has died on January 21, 2017. She was 65. Maggie died of cancer, according to a statement posted on Facebook by Suzzy: “Friends, my dear, beautiful sister Maggie passed away today after a long struggle with cancer. She was a private person, too sensitive and shy for this world, but brimming with life, love, and talent. I want to let you know how grateful she was to everyone who listened and understood her through her music and her songs. After decades of singing, writing, traveling and performing together, we spent the last month and a half helping each other through her final journey, now I have to let her go. I’m heartbroken. I adored her. She was smart, wickedly funny, and authentic - not a false bone in her body - a brilliant songwriter, with a distinct unique perspective, all heart and soul. It’ll be hard for me to carry on without her.”

Growing up in Park Ridge, New Jersey, eldest sister Maggie formed a duo with middle sister Terre, and while touring, they caught the attention of Paul Simon, who brought them in as backup singers for his hit 1973 album, There Goes Rhymin’ Simon. In 1975, they released an album of their own. Shortly after that, youngest sister Suzzy joined to form The Roches trio. The voices of this threesome blended majestically, with Maggie’s rich contralto balanced by Terre’s soprano and Suzzy filling in the mid-range. They played Greenwich Village folk venues and, in 1979, released the well-received The Roches, the first of their dozen albums as a trio, and were booked on Saturday Night Live.

KCRW 1995/2003 [no label, 1CD]

The Roches: Live on Morning Becomes Electic, Santa Monica, CA; June 27, 1995. The Be Good Tanyas: March 31, 2003. Very good radio broadcasts.

The Roches (Maggie, Terre, and Suzzy Roche), from New Jersey, need no introduction for their three-part and rich harmonies. On this show, they were promoting their 1995 Can We Go Home Now release.

Thanks to markp for sharing the Roches FM broadcast at Dime.

The Be Good Tanyas are a Canadian alt-country group whose influences include folk, country and bluegrass. Like The Roches, they are made up of three women - Frazey Ford (guitar, vocals), Samantha Parton (guitar, mandolin, banjo, vocals), and Trish Klein (guitar, banjo, vocals). This 2003 show was hosted by Nic Harcourt and was extracted from kcrw.com.

  4. I like to tell people that live in Park Ridge NJ, home to James Gandolfini, Richard Nixon and the Roches.

When people invariably say “Who?”, I tell them: “Richard Nixon. He was the President once”.

By darth on Jun 23, 2015

  10. Nice Roches recordings are always appreciated. This one is new to me. Thanks! I would have loved to see them live since I saw their Berlin Rockpalast show on TV in 1982 but it never happened and sadly it won’t happen anymore. Maybe younger or 2nd generation Roches but without retired(?) Maggie the Roches magic is missing.
Btw, thanks BigO for finally removing the annoying wobbling boobs from the front page!

  16. maybe darth holds the record for how many sites hes been banned from,i wonder if he will brag about it,

By bronze medal on Jun 23, 2015

  17. why would it take a rat to know a rat? and what made nixon a rat? i dont get that accusation at all.
i never understood that line about it taking one to know one.
and if u think it was a good call when he says that it took one to know one.. saying good call to him immediately after u call him a rat for realizing im one.. makes no sense either.
btw.. the exy site blocked me first then steves site. not the other way around.
there isnt much chat going on on that site. clearly he doesnt want ppl talking on there. he doesnt want comments or chat at all. if u notice no one talks at all whatsoever there and if anyone does it is deleted quickly. ive seen 40 comments that shouldnt have been deleted at all get removed. some sites believe that a comment box or section is for ppl to express themselves talk and communicate. some ppl put a chat box on their site for chatting. some say its not just for links but then turn around and act like it is. there is contradiction abound. this site here is different. one has to seriously break a rule that is way beyond the norm to have his comment removed. and even then the entire comment isnt often removed but a portion might be. like when i posted the robert plant bonnaroo performance from mtn jam from a few weeks ago. incidentally there was a posting on the newsletter that i often link to with news reports called ultimate rock etc. about robert plant and there was a snippet from that performance. in the comments section i posted that download if anyone wanted that show. hehe.

    By Jerry's Finger on Jun 23, 2015

  19. nixon =rat
    darth =rat
surely you are not so stupid you didn`t know that you are the rat that recognizes other rats.
wow, thought you were a bit more clever than that, I `ll dumb it down for you next time darth.

By loaves and fishes on Jun 23, 2015

  20. bragging about being shut up on 2 different sites and not realizing why is pretty lame.

By loaves and fishes on Jun 23, 2015

  21. yes my darthy is pretty damn slow.
he’ has been a special needs child his whole life.
yes dumb it down for him please.
a normal 4 year old can understand it.
    but not my pumpkin darthy.
    it’s been a sad life.

By darths mom on Jun 24, 2015

  22. we’re leaving on our annual family vacation here in a few weeks.
I will try to tie him down to his chair out on the lake dock so he can get more sun.
hopefully that will clear his mind for a little bit and restraint might help you all on this site.

By darths mom on Jun 24, 2015

  23. its ok loaves , cool name by the way hes up to his old tricks, thats why hes banned elsewhere, and then his own words he admits hes a rat, ” good call to him immediately after u call him a rat for realizing im one..” he just keeps crying wolf
