KPFX Folk Scene, 1973-1975 [no label, 2CD]

Los Angeles; August 12, 1973; June 10, 1974 and January 12, 1975. Very good radio broadcasts.

Thanks to Syd for sharing the tracks at The Traders’ Den.

Syd noted:

This is a truly fabulous and interesting collection of early Tom Waits’ radio shows that includes music and interviews during a period of about a year and half; around the time of his first couple of album releases. Fascinating because you can actually hear audibly the metamorphosis of Tom from a struggling musician into a star. His singing style change is remarkable and his growing confidence is obvious. The earliest stuff doesn’t sound at all like the Tom we know and love. The change in his voice is amazing (smoking and drinking does take its toll, lol). Tom’s interviews are very interesting as he tells the background stories of the songs, kind of a pre-Storytellers thing. Don’t miss this one if you don’t have it. Enjoy.

  4. Gotta hand it to Waits… NObody in the pop music sphere has evolved as defiantly and covered as many different genres as he has. And his lyrics can stand against anyone’s.
