New Orleans 2015 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, New Orleans Fair Grounds
New Orleans, LA; April 25, 2015. Very good FM broadcast.

Billie Holiday would have been 100 this year. Here is another Billie Holiday tribute, this time from vocalist Cassandra Wilson.

Cassandra Wilson showed that New Orleans Jazz Fest could still be a credible venue for ambitious, exploratory artists to share their musical passions. The singer offered her fans - and many newcomers - an incantatory, blues-haunted look at the legacy of Billie Holiday, expanding on the work documented in her just-released recording, Coming Forth By Day.

If anyone came to hear note-for-note transcriptions of Holiday material, they probably left disappointed. Wilson’s fresh arrangements transformed this familiar swing era material, skirting close to rock theatrics when DiRenzo brought out his mallets, and vaulting into jazzy harmonic mazes when Wilson turned to Plaxico, and rode high on his flexible, ever-swinging bass springboard.

Wilson also broke a cardinal rule of Jazz Fest with Saturday’s performance, asking a boogie-obsessed audience to sit and listen to something sad. In song after song, she skipped the bouncy, finger-snapping side of Holiday’s artistry, and steered toward dark, expressionist readings of songs associated with her great predecessor: “Crazy He Calls Me,” “What a Little Moonlight Can Do,” “Good Morning Heartache,” “These Foolish Things,” and “Don’t Explain.” Wilson is a storyteller, a dramatist, a genius who shares Billie Holiday’s ability to transform pop dross into diamonds. She tried to deliver for New Orleans - almost knocked it out of the park…

  4. Well, that was extremely disappointing, both in terms of sound and her singing - and I say this as someone who likes her. Won’t be keeping this one, I’m afraid.

  5. Cassandra wilson is one of those artists that i want to like, think I should like, but just don’t.
There’s a lot of artists like that I guess. In some cases i really like the artist themselves, appreciate what they do, what they say, etc, but their music just doesn’t do anything for me. I’m not saying they are bad or not talented in anyway. It just doesn’t do it for me.
