Austin 1989 [no label, 2CD]

Live at Liberty Lunch, Austin, Texas; October 1, 1989. Fairly to very good soundboard.

“King” Sunny Ade is a Nigerian musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and a pioneer of modern world music. He has been classed as one of the most influential musicians of all time.

His music is in the age-old tradition of singing poetic lyrics (”ewi” in Yoruba) and praise of dignitaries as well components of Juju (traditional African belief) called the Ogede (casting a spell). Hence, Ade’s music constitutes a record of the oral tradition of his people for posterity. - wikipedia

Thanks to the taper; Stagger Lee for the transfer; original uploader; and to zootype for keeping the show alive at Dime.

Original Tracks 04 and 05 were two pieces in one long track with a long tape flip gap in the second track/piece - those are now retracked as two pieces and the gap is removed - an audible glitch remains. No remixing/EQ applied.

  3. Goddamn the US State Department for fucking up King Sunny’s band’s work visas for the 2015 American tour they had to cancel! I’ve been waiting 30 years to see him.

  4. Saw him in ‘83 at the old Wax Museum in DC. It seemed like most of the staff of the Nigerian Embassy was there as well as a sold out crowd of DC music lovers. An incredible, kinetic night.

  7. Thanks, someguy. I’d love to find the rest too. Just beginning to search, but I did find a link to the same show with the same notes (and no titles). Think they got it from BigO?
