VAN MORRISON
Belfast 2015 [no label, 2CD]

Live at Cyprus Avenue, Belfast, Northern Ireland; August 31, 2015. Very good BBC Radio Ulster broadcast.

Thanks to reader Ronnie Carnwath who recorded and shared the show. Ronnie added: “For some, to complain that he didn’t play Cyprus Avenue (from Astral Weeks), that seemed a little churlish if you ask me…” [But that’s Van The Man for you!]

Gary Galbraith wrote:

Considering the volume of shows Van Morrison has played in his home city in the last three years at venues ranging from dinner shows at hotels, large arenas, public parks, old cinemas, jazz clubs and even the assembly hall of his old school, no way was the 70th birthday of Belfast¹s most celebrated musical export going to be allowed to pass quietly. As it turned out, the East Side Arts company managed to pull off their biggest coup yet, by persuading him to end their festival and perform two 90-minute sets actually ON Cyprus Avenue, the first of which was broadcast live on BBC Radio Ulster and recorded by BBC Northern Ireland to be broadcast on TV on September 4.

For anyone expecting a setlist heavy on songs namechecking various parts of his native East Belfast and especially the celebrated song named in honour of the gig¹s location, then you can always rely on Van to defy logic and do almost the opposite. Nonetheless, it was a hugely enjoyable afternoon, backed by a superb band, with a couple of nice guest appearances and several standout performances such as Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, And The Healing Has Begun and  the closing In the Garden. And he even told a joke about the Dalai Lama.

  8. I haven’t posted up any commentary of late, but this one is really nice. I have always liked Van, all the way back to Them, so as I get older it’s nice to hear that he’s still got it. I like that. Very clean radio broadcast, too. Many thanks!
