Tokyo 2009 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Tokyo Dome, Tokyo, Japan, July 10, 2009. Very good audience recording.

When Simon and Garfunkel broke up in 1970, fans feared that that would be the end of the duo. But in 1981, they reunited for a free concert in New York City’s Central Park and then went on a world tour in 1982/83. In 1993, they did 21 sold-out shows in New York and they toured in 2003 and 2004. And on February 13, 2009, when Paul Simon played at Beacon Theatre in New York, for the encore, he brought out his old friend, Art Garfunkel. So this current tour of Australia, New Zealand and Japan is not totally unexpected.

Japanese fan Hide did a very good job capturing the Tokyo July 10 show - the sound is clear; the various songs’ quieter moments distinct and one can immensely enjoy Art Garfunkel’s lilting vocals. A pleasant surprise was when Garfunkel had a solo spot and he delivered a flawless Bright Eyes, the theme song from Watership Down, effortlessly hitting the high notes, which he later repeated with Bridge Over Troubled Water. [In Melbourne, Garfunkel dedicated Bright Eyes to Michael Jackson.]

For those who grew up to the Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack, watching the two perform their classics without losing any of the edge is like meeting old friends. And by the time they reach The Boxer, they have warmed up the crowd enough for the audience to clap along - and that’s what old friends do - they cheer each other along.

If they choose to end their show with Leaves That Are Green, a wistful take on ageing and getting on with the years (though for the two, it’s more like rolling back the years), it is the familiar strains of a jaunty Cecilia that the audiences will take home with them - to paraphrase what the pair once sang, “keep the fans satisfied.”

Once again, thanks to Hide for sharing the show on the Dime site.
