MATTHEW SWEET
Philadelphia 1992 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Chestnut Cabaret, Philadelphia; April 1, 1992. Very good soundboard.

For a year in the early ’90s, Matthew Sweet worked with Lloyd Cole, Robert (Voidoids) Quine, Richard (Television) Lloyd and Fred Maher, among others, working on Girlfriend, which was released in 1991 to critical acclaim. It was really a smashing slab of guitar pop and widely acknowledged as Swee’ts breakthrough album. And here is Sweet making the rounds, promoting the album.

Thanks to lilpanda for sharing the show at Dime.

  2. Thanks for this, Big O, looking VERY forward to it. Sweet was one of the signature artists on Penn’s WXPN-FM at the time and tracks from Girlfriend were often featured on Micheala Majoun’s morning show. He has moved into a series of successful cover albums with Susannah Hoffs but for a while he cornered a market on power pop.

  3. Thanks, Big O!
I’ve always preferred the live versions of the songs on “Girlfriend,” some of which can be found on the promotional CD “Goodfriend: Another Take on Girlfriend,” and this performance has songs that aren’t on that disc. He’s great, and this is a worthy addition to the Matthew Sweet catalog.

  4. What a band they were. Ivan Julien, the other Voidoid, came with Sweet to Memphis a bit later in my time
