With Jean Luc-Ponty, Sal Marquez and George Duke
Detroit 1973 (?) [no label, 1CD]

Unknown venue; May 1973. Very good soundboard.

Thanks to the original uploader; RobSam (tape contribution); doctorzap (NAK DR-1 transfer); flambay (speed correction); mudsharknyc (speed correction, retracking and editing); and to bigfootpezao for sharing the show at Dime.

This show was originally shared at

Original notes:

This incredible tape was kindly provided by RobSam and transferred via NAK DR-1 by doctorzap and serves as a significant upgrade to all known previous versions of this excellent and somewhat mysterious show. If you have heard this show from any other known source, then be prepared to be astonished by the clarity and amazingly detailed stereo separation contained herein.

This tape needed speed correction including two rather challenging variable speed/pitch correction segments as noted in the FIXES section of the text below. The variable speed/pitch problems have been found on all circulating versions known to date as well as some SQ issues that occur during the last minute or so of Dupree’s Paradise, around the location of tape flip 2.

As to the date of this mysterious show, there is some discussion here and here.

Fixes: Speed correction of -40 cents performed from the very beginning of the Tune Up Introduction Preamble through 00:06:28.10 of Dupree’s Paradise. Speed correction of -30 cents performed from 00:06:28.10 of Dupree’s Paradise through the remainder of the show. Variable speed correction was applied in two segments of Dupree’s Paradise @ 00:06:28.10 - 00:06:48.50 and @ 00:09:03.50 - 00:09:22.50. The editing together of the two tape sides of Dupree’s Paradise took place @ 00:06:28.10.

Tape Flip: These were kept unchanged as provided from the RobSam-doctorzap shoebox seed, hence no silence removed or fade-outs/fade-ins performed. So both tape flips are heard as is on this FZ Shows entry matching those found in the shoebox seed.

Dupree’s SQ Issues: Have also been left as is and are located around tape flip 2 at 00:18:49.00 and present from 00:18:35.30 through 00:19:26.40. No biggie.

No fills available for the missing SBD portions herein as no alternate source has been known to date.

  1. 11 Responses to “FRANK ZAPPA - DETROIT 1973 (?)”

  2. This sounds like the set that took place at Masonic Temple in Detroit in during the fall months of 1973 or winter months of 1974. I saw Frank at the Masonic Temple during my sophomore of college, which was 73-74 school year. For that time period, Masonic Temple was the medium size venue with the best acoustics in Detroit. I couldn’t imagine him playing the Olympia Stadium or Cobo Hall, both much bigger with poor acoustics, and by this time he was too big for the Michigan Theater.

  6. this might be the full band lineup, according to Glide Magazine:
“The maestro’s 1973 line-up certainly ranks among his finest, featuring the talents of Ralph Humphrey (drums), Ian Underwood (sax, keyboards), George Duke (keyboards), Tom Fowler (bass), Bruce Fowler (trombone), and Jean Luc Ponty (violin), and loyal percussionist Ruth Underwood.”

thanks for another fine show bigO.

  7. Wasn’t Ruth the only woman to ever play with Frank’s band on a regular tour (as opposed to a one-off performance)?
