Milton Keynes 2015 [no label, 2CD]

Live at The Stables, Wavendon, Milton Keynes, UK; December 15, 2015. Very good audience recording.

There are some who feel that a Lindisfarne Christmas show truly makes Christmas official!

[The Lindisfarne Christmas concerts have long been a staple of the festive period.] The lineup features one of the folk-rock group’s founders, Rod Clements, and members from lineups throughout Lindisfarne’s rich 33-year history: Dave Hull-Denholm, Ian Thompson, Steve Daggett, Charlie Harcourt and Roxy Music drummer, Paul Thompson. Rod, who penned Meet Me On The Corner among many other tracks from the band’s back catalogue, was delighted when the remaining members decided they wanted to carry on performing and invited him to join in. Complete with Christmas hats and a stockingful of classic hits such as No Time to Lose, Meet on the Corner, Fog On The Tyne, Clear White Light and Run For Home, the audience wouldn’t have had any trouble putting thoughts of last minute shopping out of their mind.

Thanks to steve23yh who recorded and shared the show at Dime.

Gutted times two this year - firstly when Jacka [mandolin player Ray Jackson] retired, and then secondly, when the Christmas concerts were announced to be on Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd - just too far to go mid-week. Then out of the blue, a warm-up gig at the Stables: whahey bonny lads.

Saw the lads in the ’70s and ’80s, which meant that I’d never seen, or even heard, the late version of the band that was fronted by Rod - so was a bit reticent as to what it would sound like. No problems there: though it was a bit of a shock to find Rod actually on vocals - what next, Ron Mael singing?

Not blowing my own trumpet here, I just hold the kit, but I think this is the best quality recording I’ve ever made. The sound in the Stables was beautiful, and it’s captured really well. It was also smashing to be about twenty feet away from the band: so what we lost by not being at City Hall was sort of made up for by the sheer proximity.

It was an absolutely rollicking night, great set-list and the band played really well. Won’t have second thoughts about going to see the new line-up again.
