Boston 2009 [A Flying Gonz & Daughter Production, 2CD]

Live at Fenway Park, Boston, MA, August 6, 2009. Very good audience recording.

Given the state of the world today - financial crisis, swine flu, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, global warming… Mrs Vandebilt’s refrain of “What’s the use of worrying?… Hey ho!” can carry quite an ironical punch, but that’s not Paul McCartney.

John Lennon will always have the more thought-provoking songs but there’s no denying that McCartney did conjure up some of the Beatles and post-Beatles’ catchiest melodies. So a Paul McCartney concert seems like one where the fan can really sing along to.

The Boston show, like the others in his current tour, is chockful of favourites - it’s a Beatles songbook plus Wings goodies plus Mecca’s other solo tunes all rolled into one. In between are songs from his 2008 album, Electric Arguments - Highway and Sing The Changes (McCartney channelling Springsteen and the E Street Band?).

While McCartney might not be able to reach those notes he once used to - Band On The Run is quite obvious (it’s always a pity there isn’t any excellent recordings of this Wings Over America tour), watching McCartney in concert today is akin to catching the legend live before… well, to his credit, he still manages to growl like he was still 17.

As David Malitz reviewed the Washington gig in the Washington Post, “Perhaps most importantly, one can sense that McCartney feels a responsibility to give back to his adoring fans. The Beatles phenomenon is one that defies generational categorization and is unlikely to ever be matched. His tributes to John Lennon (a solemn Here Today plus Give Peace a Chance) and George Harrison (Something, played on a ukulele that was a gift from Harrison) were touching, and he’s the only one who can pull that off without it feeling exploitative.

“McCartney isn’t the only musical act capable of filling a stadium, but the pure joy he brings his fans, of all ages, is unmatched. When he hangs it up, there will be an unfillable void.” And while he’s at it, those at the back won’t have time rattling their jewels, they’ll be too busy enjoying themselves.

How to top this? Add Another Day to the setlist and do Band On The Run in full. (Though it is still hard to think of Mrs Vandebilt without Linda McCartney’s background vocals.)

Thanks to wkl_taper for taping and sharing the tracks on the Dime site, and to DavePas63 for the artwork. While the taper seems a bit distant (there is a slight echo), McCartney’s vocals are loud and clear).

  8. Looks like a good one… There’s another EXCELLENT recording out there from a show last year (or was it ‘07?) in Quebec that’s worth finding. Similar setlist to this one, aside from a few differences.

But what’s with saying there’s no good recording from the Wings Over America tour? There’s the official live album, of course! There’s also the Rockshow movie, though that’s a tough one to find these days.

Anyhow, thanks as always Big O!
