BRIAN SETZER TRIO
Nashville Cat [no label, 1CD]
Live at the Wildhorse Saloon, Nashville, TN, July 18, 2003. Very good soundboard.
If listeners associate Leon Russell’s This Masquerade with George Benson, similarly listeners will tend to associate the haunting instrumental, Sleep Walk, with Brian Setzer. After all, in 1998 Setzer won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental for the Santo and Johnny Farina song.
It is easy to imagine the rockabilly Setzer, who made his name in the ’80s with The Stray Cats, to do a Chet Atkins tribute (as he does here) but to give the late ’50s Sleep Walk a rock dressing is quite something. That Setzer does it with ease and aplomb says a lot about Setzer’s artistry. And lately, Setzer has even branched into classical too.
Unless you are a guitar fan or into The Stray Cats, not many listeners think of Setzer as a guitar hero and that a line of guitars has been named after him but listening to this Nashville show might change your mind.
Sure the songs might be light on the ears but it was a party for Fender guitars and Setzer didn’t hold himself back. He even yodelled! Apart from Sleep Walk (four minutes of sheer bliss), the other stand out tracks include This Cat’s On A Hot Tin Roof, Ignition, Stray Cat Strut and don’t forget the guitar solo on 16 Chicks.
And if some of the tunes vaguely recall The Honeydrippers, that’s because Setzer was also a member of the group. Put it this way - Brian Setzer sure makes rockabilly hot and funky. Time to put on your dancin’ shoes.
