Time To Dare [MXF Records, 2CD]

Live at the Hilton Showroom, Las Vegas, NV; September 4, 1974 (closing show). Very good soundboard, with audience patch.

If there is one thing that marked (or should that be marred?) the 2016 US Elections is Over The Top - scandals that range from Donald Trump’s taped remarks about groping women and using his fame for sex to Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server (and an investigation into alleged sexts to a teenager from Anthony Weiner, whose estranged wife is a top Clinton aide). Smelling like Watergate, there are even reports that the FBI was trying to tip the election toward Trump! Over the top - just like on this 1974 Las Vegas show where Elvis sings It’s Now Or Never not once but twice!

Thanks to Roy from BootlegCDR for sharing the show at The Traders’ Den.

Roy noted:

This is a major upgrade to Ft Baxter’s “Desert Storm”… and it features about seven to eight minutes of audience patches to a far superior mono soundboard source.

Meanwhile, Take 1 commented at the Den: “If you are looking for Soundboard quality this is not it. Treble is off the board and sounds like a recording from a cave, way too hollow. But if you are a Elvis fan as much as I am, you will want this!”

[Ed: Ft Baxter’s Desert Storm is sourced from (SBD?) “Mastertapes” and Time To Dare is said to be from a soundboard. The sound on the concert proper is very good though the patches - especially the Opening Vamp and CC Rider - are rough.]

  1. 8 Responses to “ELVIS PRESLEY - IT’S NOW OR NEVER”

  2. Elvis was still able to deliver (on occasion) a good vocal show in the seventies but was physically severely limited- a sad parody of his former self.

In shows such as this one, he demonstrated how the ravages of drugs had taken their toll on him. The “Tiger Man” king of rock and roll was gone forever. If only…

  3. The bulk of the tracks sound good… to me, it sounds like someone connected a tape deck to the monitor system’s mix for the vocal performers. The audience “patches” are really not worth the effort, as those parts of the show are on dozens of other Elvis shows of the era.
I have a friend who is a big Elvis fan who will like it very much, however.

  4. I think the earlier “Desert Storm” release which had all the good sound quality tracks was better soundboard quality than this one, and the “patches” on here to fill out the show are just awful sound quality, sounds like someone had a micro cassette recorder in their purse.

  5. Agree, Dessert Storm was better quality overall. Irritating to listen to the lo-fi audience stuff mixed in here and there - a mistake to mix in such inferior sound quality with otherwise excellent sound. Skip this one and go with Dessert Storm.

  6. a few less Dessert Storms and Elvis might still be with us…………………..

  7. Very sad , especially when I hear that the Col nixed Elvis chances to branch out and change his image and grow as a performer Elvis was offered the role of Joe Buck in Midnight Cowboy and eight years earlier Tony in West side story , the Col went for those cheesy 60s films instead turning Elvis into a parody leading to Elvis depression and starting the downslide , Apparently Elvis wouldn’t stand up to the Col and take control of his own career for some reason Elvis was very loyal even when it meant hurting himself

  8. And these cheesy Tom Jones glitzy Vagas style shows . Every one he did since his comeback in 69 to his death in 77 were virtually the same , never experimented did different things or worked with different artists and producers etc , just stuck with his Memphis mafia and band and did the same thing over and over again , very sad

  9. If you watch those very early Elvis films from the late 50s early 60s Live me tender , King Creole , Flaming Star , Wild in the country etc they weren’t that bad and Elvis showed real acting ability , then the crappy movies followed as the sixties went along girls girls girls , girl happy spin out , kissing cousins , Rostabout , Tickle me , Fun in Acapulco , Speedway , Double Trouble and on and on , instead of doing better movies or better yet performing and not the Vagas style shit he did all these shitty movies , Elvis career will always have a what if attached to it
