Providence 1974 [no label, 2CD, Dan Lampinski audience recording]

Live at the Palace Theater, Providence, RI, December 8, 1974.

If 1973’s Selling England By The Pound turned Genesis into stars, then 1974’s The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway was the eagerly-awaited follow-up album. Fans were excited by the tour, with lazer lights and all - the Providence show was among the earlier dates and anticipation must have been very high.

While the Providence show has been circulating among fans, many would rate the Hogweed audience version (click here) as a must-own for this date. Recently, a version of the show taped by Dan Lampinski surfaced - and one that rivals the Hogweed version. As one fan commented on the internet, “(wiping tears from eyes) Easily the most important find for Genesis fans since the Jackson Tape…”

An interesting anecdote regarding the show was posted by glampins: “Another little tidbit of info on this show from Dan Lampinski’s brother. It was a miserable night in Providence with snow and then heavy rain. Peter Gabriel refers to the rain leaking through the roof directly over the stage. It was quite a delay until the rain stopped and the tarps were removed from the gear. What Mr. Gabriel doesn’t tell you is that directly across the street from the theater was a Dunkin Donuts. Genesis arranged for dozens and dozens of donuts and gallons of coffee to be brought into the lobby, all for free because of the delay. Dan convinced me to go to this concert despite the fact that I had no idea what the Lamb was. I was mesmerized and to this day I still say it was the single best concert I have ever seen.”

A note on Dan Lampinski: Dan recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ’ing has been done to any of the transfers.

From those of us who weren’t there (and even those who were there)… thanks to djscomics for sharing these tracks on the Dime site and to Eric Thiessen for the artwork. Above all, thanks to Dan and also to Carl Morstadt who mastered the tracks.

It’s been said Genesis were not happy with the vocals of their 1974 live recordings. It wasn’t Peter Gabriel’s voice but the mask he wore that sometimes affected the quality of the recordings. An official boxset of their live work was released as Genesis Archive 1967-’75. It avoided the ‘74 shows and offered one full concert from Jan 24, 1975 in Los Angeles. You can buy the four-CD boxset here.

  4. I would be curious to see how people rate the two versions of this show in terms of sound quality, etc. I was there! Fantastic memories……

  5. Walter, imo the Hogweed version is beyond compare, the epitome, the holy grail. Can’t say enough about it. It excels in every respect, from the performance itself to the recoding. Of particular revelation is Phil’s role doing backing vocals. He sang a lot on the Lamb tour.

  6. Thanks for posting a great show.Better than the copy I got from Napster some time ago.I was at this show and never knew there was a boot of it until a few years ago,I can vouch to it’s authenticity because of the raindrops reference! This show blew my 17 year old mind away in 1974!A magical night…..

  7. I’ve heard the Live Lamb from the box set and it doesn’t have the aural feel of a live concert. In fact it’s been altered. “However, for some listeners, the set may be frustrating, and not because it contains rarities — it’s because those rarities have been tampered with. Peter Gabriel recut some of his vocals for The Lamb in 1998, claiming that he didn’t give his best possible performance because his elaborate costumes were constricting. Steve Hackett followed suit and “brushed up” some guitar lines. This may frustrate some fans who would prefer to have the original tapes preserved.”

This excellent recording of the Lamb by Dan Lampinski captures the real atmosphere of being in the audience; especially listening through headphones or earbuds. I prefer the authenticity of the Providence recording flaws and all with the p.a. system over the adulterated box set version. Plus I was there and it was truly a spectacular musical performance. It was the best theater concert I ever saw. It’s still fresh in my mind thirty-four years later…unreal!

This above statement is totally misleading. The Hogweed version is my recording! I advise everyone to go to and download the original as mastered by Carl M. and uploaded by Kevin (djcomics). It’s is deceitful and insulting that the Hogweeders do not acknowledge the source…which is my recording..and the work done by Carl and Kev to provide to the masses. Shame on you jokers!

  9. ANSWER DAN AND FRIENDS. Is Carpet Crawlers of Providence Boston the best version, the 1-2 duet of Peter and Phil on voices is a gem. One opinion please. Thanks.
