Wallingford 2005 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Chevrolet Theatre, Wallingford, CT, November 20, 2005. Good to very good audience recording.

Since the early ’80s, Carly Simon concerts have been rare and special occasions… and causes for celebration. So here she was, promoting her Moonlight Serenade album. For this 2005 album, Simon performed two concerts on the Queen Mary 2 and played a number of shows in the US, her first tour in 10 years. Appearing with her were her two children with James Taylor - Ben and Sally.

As her covers albums show, Simon does capture the magic of the songs - “warmed comfort food”, one writer quipped - and she opened her Wallingford, CT show with the loungey songs from her then new album, with tracks such as The More I See You, Alone Together and the title track, Moonlight Serenade. But no matter how much heart she poured into the song, it’s hard to beat Lester Bowie’s smouldering slow burn instrumental version.

The tempo picks up with Anticipation and, amidst a jovial atmosphere, Simon appeared relaxed and delivered what was basically a greatest hits package, giving The Right Thing To Do a miss, but featuring the all important Mockingbird (with Ben standing in for his father), Nobody Does It Better, Coming Around Again and You’re So Vain, with a slight detour into the reggaeish Floundering.

This is a good to very good (audience) recording and one does feel sorry for a member of the audience who seemed to be suffering from a bad throat but the coughing wasn’t too distracting. Already, the scarcity of Carly Simon live recordings makes this a collector’s item. And as every fan knows, “well you said that we made such a pretty pair/and that you would never leave,” it’s just too difficult to say goodbye or no to a Carly Simon show.

  3. Thanks so much, Carly shows are indeed rare. Love this, even with the annoying whistling along, ugh. Fortunately, seems the chap didn’t know “It Was So Easy,” one of my all-time fave tunes. - glad for that.

  5. Hi Big O,
Can you enable the links for this performance?
I have a very sketchy version from the PBS video tape broadcast and am hoping this version is superior.
BTW - This show was truly amazing - her voice was in great shape, she had just released some new music, the band was exactly right, and the crowd and venue were made for video!
    Thank you!
