Amsterdam 2009 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Paradiso, Kleine Zaal, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, August 27, 2009. Very good soundboard.

If the recent Magnolia Electric Co. album, Josephine, can’t be dislodged from your brain, then this concert in Amsterdam might just soothe the obsession a little. Because Magnolia’s frontman, Jason Molina, also hankers for Josephine, and this gig comprises eight tracks from the album. Essentially an invocation of the late Magnolia touring bassist, Evan Farrell, who collaborated on most of the Josephine songs, before dying tragically in an apartment fire, the gig begins with the beautiful An Arrow in the Gale which asks the question: “Oh, which one of us is free?”

Then some of the older chestnuts are brought out including the proto-Neil-Young-type track, The Dark Don’t Hide It, which dates back to Magnolia’s debut gig in 2003 when Molina gave up his Songs: Ohia moniker to form the more rocking Magnolia. Just check out Hammer Down, originally an acoustic number, which now sounds like a rock single, or the gentler Talk to Me Devil, Again, which now rocks out in desperation.

But back to Josephine, the title-track which is just heartbreaking: “I’ve lived so long with the shadows/That I’ve become one.” As Molina has said: “I guess it’s been… you would call it harrowing. The writing of that record was extremely difficult for me.”

As elsewhere, the ubiquitous ghost of Warren Zevon is invoked on a cover of Lawyers, Guns and Money. This is the group’s first shwo with new bass player Sal. Sound quality is good as this was a soundboard recording. - Philip Cheah
