LESLIE WEST R.I.P. 1945 - 2020

Leslie West, the towering guitarist who created the hard-rock milestone “Mississippi Queen” with his band Mountain, died Wednesday (December 23) morning. West’s brother, Larry West Weinstein, confirmed the musician’s death to Rolling Stone. He was 75. The cause of death was cardiac arrest. On Monday, West was rushed to a hospital after suffering cardiac arrest at his home near Daytona, where he never regained consciousness.

A contemporary of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix, West was respected for his versatile playing (from fingerpicking to metallic power chords) and was revered by a new generation of guitar players who followed. In 2011, Eddie Van Halen told Rolling Stone that West and Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore were among his biggest influences: “Leslie West has this incredible tone in Mountain,” Van Halen said.

With the help of Cream producer and bass player Felix Pappalardi, who met West when he was producing the Vagrants, West made a solo album, Mountain. Mountain also became the name of the band the two men formed. Although Mountain garnered a large following, the group broke up in 1972. Taking his Cream roots to a new level, West formed a Cream-style power trio with Mountain drummer Corky Laing and Cream’s Jack Bruce. The group released three albums and sold out New York’s Carnegie Hall, but in 1974, West reformed Mountain for two more records.

West, who had moved to Florida, is survived by his wife Jenni Maurer; the couple married onstage at a Woodstock 40th anniversary concert in 2009. Of his own mixture of blues and metal, West told The Morning Call in 2000, “It’s like being a chef. You might use the same ingredients as everyone else, but it’s how you put them together. You end up with your own style.” - rollingstone.com

WEST, BRUCE & LAING
Boston 1972 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Orpheum Theatre, Boston, MA; April 27, 1972. Very good audience recording.

With arms that can barely reach around his huge pot belly to attack the instrument, Leslie (West) utilizes natural distortion from his amplifier, which is set at such high levels that it induces feedback at his slightest whim… Jack Bruce is so tiny that it seems to take every ounce of strength in his body to run across the fretboard of his bass. Despite his size, he can choke a bass better than anyone around. Corky Laing must have gone through a dozen pairs of sticks as he battered his 15-piece drum outfit. From the opening number, there was something special in their souldn. There were standing ovations for every song. Fans fought for drumsticks that few from the stage. - newspaper review

Uploader’s notes:

From the collection of kind Leslie West collector from Germany living abroad. Great recording of unknown lineage.

By kalle on May 8, 2017

  8. This is a good recording. Any chance of having someone upload an improved version of the November 29, 1972 Dallas show? That one is killer!

By Kelly on May 8, 2017

  9. The length of the recording of “Politician” is almost the same as the one on the “Live n Kickin” album and may be the same recording, but need to give it a closer comparison.

  10. Leslie West was one hell of a motherfuckin guitar player. . Another one bites the dust . Shit I feel old as dirt , they keep droppin like fuckin flys

By Derrick on Dec 24, 2020

  11. Hey DD / anti , was West another motherfuckin Jew bastard? Seems like I remember you mentioning it in the past . Say it ain’t so bro

By Derrick on Dec 24, 2020

  12. With a surname like Weinstein what do you think bro?

By DD on Dec 24, 2020

  13. Derrick, you sound like Bill; he’ll be on here crying about Tom Petty shortly.

Oh sorry, of course, you ARE Bill, ain’tcha

By Classic Rock on Dec 24, 2020

  14. Get off my fucking lawn. I know Im an asshole

By Derrick on Dec 24, 2020

  15. yeah Derrick. remember I said to you he was one of those self loathing jews who didnt want the world know he was a jew. but i feel bout him like way you feel bout bobby dylan. mountain climbing, nantucket sleighride, flowers of evil. they were a great band not as hardcore as cactus. they had felix pappalardi. his fuckin wife gail collins shot him in the head for cheating on her

By DD on Dec 24, 2020

  16. Mountain was very underrated. Another great band not in the RRHOF

By DD on Dec 24, 2020

  17. I taped Leslie at The Hop in Totowa NJ in 1992. Killer show!!! RIP Les!!!

By Ping Pong Bob on Dec 24, 2020

  18. merry christmas everyone and thanks Big o for all you do. Let`s hope everyone knocks off the idiotic porn and racist posts in the new year .

By dropkicksarge on Dec 24, 2020

  19. @dropkicksarge… You’ve got 2 Hopes: Bob, and NO!!

By HHH on Dec 25, 2020

  20. The last one was another name stealer . dd , and derrick. West was a Jew . dd , you are correct, many Jews are self loathing. Why else would they change their names . Most are child molesters, rapists, white collar criminals and ponzi schemers. When you think Jew , think Harvey Weinstein, Jeffery Epstein, Woody Allen , Bernie Madoff and George Soros . They represent most of the Hebrew mentality.

By HHH on Dec 25, 2020

  21. The fact that West’s real last name was Weinstein is ironic as hell . If names end in stein , berg or witz , you can be sure that they are Jew filth . Also ever notice how many have names with gold and silver in them ? Examples Goldberg and Silverman . Another dead giveaway .

By HHH on Dec 25, 2020

  22. Bob Dylan and Lou Reed RIP are and we’re self loathing jews . Dylan’s last name is Zimmerman, Reed had a Hebrew last name too . Can’t remember what it was .

By HHH on Dec 25, 2020

  23. Triple h , I think the Jefferson Airplane was a bunch of Jew bastards too . At least that’s what I heard . Another kick to the gut man . Always loved em as a teen and youngster. That one hurt almost as bad as Dylan . Especially if Grace was Jew . Had a crush on her as a kid . Fuck she was hot when she was young . She’s a old hag today . Man gettin older sucks

By Derrick on Dec 25, 2020

  24. DD , you’re right . Mountain was a great band . I think cactus was a little better though. Just my opinion

By Derrick on Dec 25, 2020

  25. DD , just read bout that Felix Pappalari , Gail Collins shit . I fuckin forgot all bout it . Wild man . Apparently they was both fuckin around on each other . Felix wanted to marry a daughter of of friend of his . He was gettin some of that young pussy , told her bout it and she freaked out and blew his ass away .Gotta be careful of them crazy bitches

By Derrick on Dec 25, 2020

  26. I don’t think she spent a day in jail . The judge and jury felt sorry for her if I read it right . They was both fucked up . Dope and shit . They say she used to beat him up . Felix was a little guy . Crazy bitch

By Derrick on Dec 25, 2020

  27. She shot him wit a derringer that he bought for her . Was that dumb or what ?

By Derrick on Dec 25, 2020

  28. I saw Leslie West and Felix Pappalardi at Bucknell U. back then. They performed standing on the floor of the basketball court, with the audience standing around them. I still savor Mountain’s songs “Nantucket Sleighride”, “Allisan” and “Sister Justice”. Felix Pappalardi also produced Cream’s albums and “Get Together” by the Youngbloods.

By Buster on Dec 26, 2020

  29. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Felix should have kept it in his pants .

    By T J on Dec 26, 2020

  30. Rumor has it Felix had a Big Un

    By U L E on Dec 26, 2020

  31. A little man with a Big Un

    By U L E on Dec 26, 2020

  32. Not like you then U L E

By HHH on Dec 26, 2020

  33. Just remembered, Reed’s last name was Reedstein.

By HHH on Dec 26, 2020

  34. HHH- yours is Havanagila, BITCH!

    By Corey M on Dec 27, 2020

  35. Don’t suppose you have a recording of their final gig at Leeds University in 1973? It was great, and made up for Mountain having to call their gig off at the university. (Which would have been their final gig!)
