Cleveland 2009 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, Cleveland, OH, April 3, 2009. Very good soundboard.

On April 3, 2009, the night before the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony,  the Raspberries performed at a private VIP event for invited Rock And Roll Hall of Fame dignitaries and their special guests.

While the group might have been known for their power pop, clean looks, catchy melodies and harmonies, it’s also likely that Eric Carmen’s All By Myself was such a monster hit that it probably overshadowed much of the Raspberries’ output.

Carmen had the hit after leaving the group in 1975. In fact, some music listeners at that time even thought that Carmen was a new singer-songwriter (in the Barry Manilow vein) and didn’t realise that he had at least a five-year career with the Raspberries.

In 2004, the group got together for a reunion concert and that led to a series of 10 shows. Now it’s 2009, and it’s fun - let’s face it: such reunions are nothing but mired in nostalgia, apart from other things (which we’ll leave aside for the time being) - to see All By Myself alongside It’s Cold Outside and Let’s Pretend in the setlist.

And if the Raspberries had reaped scorn from their critics for wearing their influences on their sleeve (Eric Carmen) does sound a little like Paul McCartney, they do so now proudly by performing The Beatles’ Ticket To Ride, Baby’s In Black and No Reply and The Who’s I Can’t Explain for their encore. And it’s hard to find a sweeter sound than that.

Thanks to Lincoln Park Mark for sharing the lossless tracks.
