Young Americans Sessions [no label, 1CD]

Demos and outtakes. August 11, 1974 to January 1975. Very good soundboard.

Notes from original uploader:

This is my compilation of the only “real” unreleased outtakes from the Young Americans album sessions. I’ve structured the track order according to info found on www.freewebs.com/theyearofthediamonddog/youngamericanssessions.htm. The tracks (taken from Can You Hear Me Call - The Young Americans Studio Sessions by Eat A Peach Records) are all lossless
and come straight from the original silver-disc.

  2. Thank you!

  3. Thank you for this fantastic post !
Too bad for the several samples that could have been full songs takes, but you can’t always get what you want..

  4. What a great early Christmas present!

  5. Thank you!

Any St Vincent soundboards from 2014-2015?

By Niles on Dec 17, 2017

  6. @Alberto - the full versions of those “sample’ songs have never leaked out. The reel of tape that contained the full versions was sold on Ebay for a wild amount of money. Speculation is that bowie himself purchased it.

Another copy of that reel exists at a Philadelphia university archives, but there is zero chance of them leaking the full version due to copyright issues.

so, sadly, this is all we have.. Let’s hope that we get the full versions one day :)

  7. @BigO - Thank you so much for posting this stuff, one of my fave periods of Bowie’s career.

  8. Quite the Christmas gift. Thanks! Young Americans was never my favorite album of Bowie’s but the stripped down versions of some of the songs are excellent.

  9. It’s too bad this material wasn’t on the recent Bowie box set. That might have made it worthwhile

  10. I think there’s good news coming. Bowie estate released the demo version of Let’s Dance on what would’ve been his 71st birthday. I think that was a trial balloon to see how well demo versions of Bowie’s songs will sell. We just might have full albums of demos if it sells well. Just a theory but I can believe it’s true. I hope it will be true anyway because this collection is great. Thanks for posting

  11. Hey Pizza Tony, but then they wouldn’t be able to spread this out for decades, just giving you bits at a time and always making you purchase things you already have to get the gems you don’t. Its what all the legacy trusts aspire to do, unfortunately.

  12. I was in the studio to listen to the rough version of what became Young Americans. I remembered hearing pieces of Shilling the Rubes (which was one of the working titles) and Somebody Up There.

I’m good friends with the curator of the Sigma Tapes at Drexel. They will play them for you. I’ve got to get over there and listen. I’ll report back.
