Skip Spence’s Oar [no label, 1CD]

Beck’s Record Club continues with a tribute to Skip Spence.

According to Beck’s website:

This one took place last June when Wilco was in town for the release of their new eponymous album. They came by after a long day filming a TV appearance and still managed to put down eight songs with us. Jamie Lidell was in the studio with me working on his new record. Leslie Feist happened to be in town editing her documentary and heard we were all getting together. Recording took place at Sunset Sound Studios in the room where the Stones did a lot of Exile On Main Street (and looking at the records on the walls it appeared that the Doobie Brothers recorded most of their output there too). Sitting in on drums, we had James Gadson, who’s played on most of the Bill Withers records and on songs like ‘Express Yourself’ and ‘I Will Survive.’ Jeff Tweedy’s son Spencer played played additional drums. Also, Brian Lebarton, from the last two Record Club sessions is back.

The record chosen this time was Skip Spence’s ‘Oar.’ Our friend Danny Kalb engineered.

Each track is accompanied by a video. Visit Beck’s Record Club for the videos.

  3. Thanks for this BigO and at 320kbps too! The sound is great.
I own the original on vinyl. The lowest selling album in Columbia’s catalog. Later got the cd for the bonus tracks. Then More Oar (the tribute) on cassette and finally bought a download. And now this version.
The original is one of my all time favorites. If you’ve never heard it you should.Even if it drives your friends or your wife out of the room.
Anybody have any Moby Grape or Jerry Miller Band to post at BigO?

  9. This is great, and even more so on a rainy, hangover-y Jan. 1st. Can’t think of a better way to start out the year.
