Time was when Neil Young considered life on the road, work. These days he brings the family.

USA Life Tour 1987 [Viglione, 3CD]

Live in the USA from August to September 1987, various dates and venues. Very good audience recordings.

In 1987, Neil Young toured the USA and Europe with Crazy Horse in support of the album, Life. It was a busy year. By November, Young teamed up with The Bluenotes and did a lightning tour of the West Coast in support of his upcoming album, This Note’s For You. Both albums had one thing in common, his disgust at business.

Geffen had sued Young around 1983 for producing albums that did not sound like Neil Young albums. Geffen was unhappy with Trans and Everybody’s Rockin’ and withheld the release of the country album Old Ways. Neil Young was having a bad day at work.

When the dust settled, Young still had two albums to fulfil his contract. Out came Landing On Water and the final Geffen album, Life. To rebuild his career, Young teamed with Crazy Horse and did a year-long tour.

This compilation was made prior to bittorrent and was shared via a CD-Tree. You joined the tree either as a branch or as a leaf. You were obliged to pass on the music you received to the next leaf. Viglione made very good compilations and this one of the 1987 tour is very good. It captures all the different songs Young and Crazy Horse played including such seldom performed tunes as Farmer’s Song, American Dream, Someday, Big Room, Too Lonely, Ain’t It The Truth, In The Name Of Love, Mideast Vacation and our favourite, Prisoners Of Rock ‘N’ Roll.

Knowing his contract with Geffen was running out, Young was back being Young. To win back the fans, it was back to the good old days where the first part of a Neil Young concert was just him solo and acoustic. There’s a nice acoustic version of This Note’s For You played here before the album was released. The fans don’t recognize the song and there’s no cheer when Young says “Ain’t singin’ for Pepsi/ain’t singin’ for Coke”. Viglione expertly places the other anti-business Farmer’s Song next (”In the struggle for parity/Not one man’s voice can sound/Cause the foundation of the conglomerate/Is firmly in the ground”). Of course by collecting 18 tracks, this balloons the solo set but it’s well worth it.

The electric second set has the crowd up on its feet cheering Young and Crazy Horse. Again to showcase all the songs played, Viglione has stretched the setlist to two CDs. The sound quality is really very good. With the exception of some tracks on CD 2 where there’s a bit of echo, the rest are recorded up close.

It’s been too long and we no longer recall who sent us this set. Much thanks to the compiler and whoever it was that arranged for the CD-tree of this set.

*songs from the Life album.

All details of dates and venues can be found in the artwork.

It was a strange time. Young was about to do another Time Fades Away with 1987’s Life album. The entire Life album was recorded “live” late in 1986. New songs, as was the case with Time Fades Away, were played in concert and recorded with Crazy Horse, the first time in years he was back with the band. Altogether nine songs were gathered and released as Life. Definitely not in the same league as Time Fades Away, which was intimate, whereas Life was an extroverted political grenade. Most found the album painful to listen. It is estimated to have sold 400,000 copies worldwide, making it his worst selling album. The album is out-of-print. 2. “Life” is not so bad at all. I prefer it to “Landing on Water” and also to some of his latest records (these sometimes have only 2 or 3 good songs, the rest are fillers - and I consider myself a Neil Young fan).
By the way: Amazon lists a japanese re-issue of “Life” from 2007.

I’d like to have a live recording of the “Trans”-tour, these seem to be very rare.

  3. Whoa! What a nice collection. Thank you very, very much. I’ve finally managed to listen to it all. Great performances and not so bad sound at all, even with the audience recordings from various venues. I don’t think there was a poor sounding one in the 3 hours and 11 minutes of music. I’ve certainly passed this along to several Neil Young afficianados.

  4. Thanks for this!
I’m also a fan of Life. Wore out my cassette the summer it came out. It hasn’t aged as well as others of his albums, but for ’80s Neil, it was pretty good for a change.

  5. Looks like a great set. Thanks for more Neil. How about some Buffalo Springfield?

  6. People love to re-write history. Both Life and Landing on Water recieved excellent reviews when they came out, and I still like both today. The only thing about Life is that Neil could’ve used better takes w/a few of the songs such as “Prisoners of Rock n’ Roll” which was an inferior take instead of, say, the explosive version from the tour ending night (Nov ‘86) that was simulcast live. A revisionist under rated era of Neil’s career with great songs, before his resurgence w/”This Notes For You” and Freedom.

  7. Awesome post, BigO… the viglioni comps are excellent but rarely get shared on the blogs - usually only on the elitist torrents.. thank you so much for sharing and can you please post other Viglioni comps? especially the 1973 Time Fades Away Tour Comp. :)
