The Golden Globe [Moonraker, 1CD]

Live at the Globe Arena, Stockholm, Sweden, June 12, 1996. Very good soundboard (internet reports say this came from a radio broadcast).

A high quality soundboard recorded in Stockholm at the Globe Arena, June 12, 1996 while Mark was touring behind his first vocal solo album, Golden Heart. - Philip Cohen

What caught listeners’ attention when the self-titled Dire Straits was released in 1978 and Communique the following year was not that Mark Knopfler’s vocals had a Dylan-ish slant but that he was an exquisite guitarist with catchy tunes such as Sultans Of Swing, Down To The Waterline, Once Upon A Time In The West, Lady Writer and Portobello Belle. A maxed-up sound, digital recording and constant exposure on MTV, 1985’s Brothers In Arms turned Dire Straits into a worldwide phenomena.

From this recording, it is the older songs that command your attention - the 13-minute Sultans Of Swing is worth the price of admission, plus a no-nonsense Money For Nothing. Unfortunately it is not the complete show - for that you will need to hunt down the two-CD audience recording. But the soundboard/broadcast sound is clear and nicely brings out Knopfler’s guitar  so fans should have nothing to complain about.

Thanks to Phil for sharing the lossless tracks.

Note: A longtime music fan, Philip Cohen was a contributor to the now-defunct ICE Magazine and compiled the boxsets for The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Humble Pie and Nice.

  9. new solo album and tour…

By darth on Sep 17, 2014

  10. saw dire straits in the early 80’s right after twisting by the pool came out - what a horrible show - I had really liked the band - the sound was crap - over loud, distorted and the band counted have cared less it seemed
one of only a small handful of concerts I have ever left early

By dwight on Sep 17, 2014

  11. if the sound was crap you cannot blame the band blame the soundman.

By little pancake on Sep 18, 2014

  12. when they do soundchecks they often do them from one point in the audience and dont account for how it will sound at other areas in the venue or when the place is full of people. they also rarely play the soundchecks as loudly as the actual concert is played. this is something i never understood. i understand that many bands dont show up for their own soundchecks.. altho straits did til they broke up.. i know this for sure.

there are always dead spots in any venue and sound in one place will sound horrible while in dozens of others will be pure dreamlike. not all venues are built acoustically perfect for concerts.
in 83.. when dwight saw the tour he mentions seeing altho i dont know where he went to see them.. they were still playing venues approximately the size of radio city music hall. altho i was at all their radio city shows that year and i thought they were fabulous. but then radio city is known for its fantastic sound in every single seat. it is the largest theater on the planet and a national landmark for good reason.

i have seen some shows where the sound was abysmal and other shows where the band was so band i left. not dire straits mind u but i walked out of huge name bands perfs. if the show or the sound is that bad.. why stay? that is.. unless u can move to a better location and find out that it was indeed your location in the first place.

i once went to see badfinger at a tiny club in the late 80s in the village. the sound was a 2-3 out of 10. i still recorded it. when i listened to the tape upon arriving at home i determined the tape was of a quality of 8-9 on an audience scale. i had different criteria for aud vs sbd recordings of course. it was a killer recording. my wife couldnt understand it either.

By darth on Sep 18, 2014

  13. darth why do you continue to spout tech talk[soundchecks] which you know absolutely nothing about. haven`t you already embarrassed yourself enough lately.

By little pancake on Sep 18, 2014

  14. “my wife couldnt understand it either.”

…nor many other things about you. hence the divorce.

By barth on Sep 18, 2014

  15. how can u decide what i know nothing about? surely u dont know me and havent known me for over a half century. theres no way u could know what i know or dont know.

as for making a mistake and posting a link to a story about a group with a similar name due to being overtired and having poor eyesight at a late nite hour… i dont believe that was proof of me not knowing anything about the subject of sound and soundchecks. i was involved in audio and video engineering for a few years and i know quite a bit about the subject. i think my knowledge is good enough on the subject to be able to speak about it. not only that.. if u look at the references that i made.. it wouldnt take someone who knows very much about the subject to explain the things above that i attempted to.

as for my divorce.. u dont know if im divorced or widowed do u? u also dont know that if i am divorced who might have initiated it. u ASSumed there.. didnt u? what an idiot u are for suggesting such a thing.
what she didnt understand had nothing to do with me. it was the recording we had made. i guess it was expecting too much for u to follow the path of that topic. why am i not surprised?

By darth on Sep 18, 2014

  16. her choice was divorce or murder. u are still alive. therefore…

By barth on Sep 18, 2014

there`s not much you haven`t done is there walter “darth” mitty.

By little pancake on Sep 18, 2014

  18. i talk about the things i have done not about the things i havent. jealous much? sorry that your life is one in which u didnt really do much or accomplish anything that u feel is impressive and u feel the need to attack others who did things u wish u did. i dont claim to be a rock star or movie star and im certainly not rich and famous. somewhat infamous however it would seem albeit on a small scale depending on your pov. but just because someone has done things u havent done doesnt mean they lead lives of grand delusion. i found what i wanted to do with myself for the majority of it and i was able to.. to a degree. i didnt do many other things i wish i could have. u did things im sure that i never did and still at over a half century havent yet done. simple things that most people take for granted. yet i dont sit here accusing a total stranger like u of making shit up.

  30. there are audience recordings from 01 rah that are pretty good and a few sbds that are not from rah tho. look on youtube for them. u can convert to mp3 if u need to. when i concern myself with obtaining recordings i dont worry about it being from a particular location unless something important happened at that location making it a historically significant performance. and even then the quality of the recording would have to be at least an 8 out of 10. im pretty picky on quality. there are cases where ill accept less but not many. right now since there are so many high quality knopfler recordings out there theres no reason to bother with inferior sounding ones. the above ones i linked to are all sbds from this year. 5 shows from may and june. thats what im talking about. and the 96 tour shows i offered are also sbds.

By bronze medal on Jun 18, 2015

  35. yeah this is your space. and im only here to help u. and u never put any energies towards insulting me. it was all one sided and in one direction. my world exists only to help u and serve u. i live so that u may enjoy life in pure happiness and pleasure with nary any difficulty. what could i have been thinking? and of course it was me who turned it into a darth fest as u claim. other people had nothing to do with this. it was all me. im so ashamed.
