That Dow Jones 1,000-point drop had us rushing to our newly-acquired Bob Dylan mystery tape for succor.

Infidels 60-min Tape (Bit of a Mystery) [no label, 1CD]

Infidels and Empire Burlesque outtakes, 1983 to 1985. Quality is excellent but fair amount of hiss, no noise reduction or EQ applied.

“I received this around the time many Infidels outtake tapes were circulating and it is a bit of a mystery as there are three Empire Burlesque outtakes inserted, and yet the sound is very consistent.

“Nothing new or unusual but I thought some may have an interest as it is transferred as received and it came from a top collector who was not known to mess around with tapes, but just to pass on to me as he had got them, very low generation in most cases.”

- eddiethecat, May 2010.

That thousand-point drop in the Dow Jones coincided with our acquiring this tape from Hunger City, a great torrent site. This is Bob Dylan as observer and commentator of “Globalisation” and its effects on people. Mostly negative. As voice of the older generation, he has the right to say “I told you so”. You don’t have to look further than Union Sundown from the Infidels album.

Well, my shoes, they come from $ingapore
My flashlight’s from Taiwan
My tablecloth’s from Malaysia
My belt buckle’s from the Amazon
You know, this shirt I wear comes from the Philippines
And the car I drive is a Chevrolet
It was put together down in Argentina
By a guy makin’ thirty cents a day
Well, it’s sundown on the union
And what’s made in the U.S.A.
Sure was a good idea
‘Til greed got in the way

He was talkin’ about you Mr Blankfein.

Both albums are critic’s favorites although it should be mentioned that the making of these albums are more important than the albums themselves. Just look at the amount of songs left off both these albums. Visit wikipedia for more info.

Empire Burlesque

This is a nice tape to chill to. Three harried songs (Julius & Ethel, Straight A’s In Love and When They Night Comes Falling) followed by the sessions for one great mellow ballad, Sweetheart Like You. Just enough time to go figure what’s wrong with the world (’what’s a sweetheart like you/doin’ in a dump like this?’). Recall Dylan’s excellent ‘Dignity’ and remember just what has poisoned the world.

We may have our iPhones and what-not high-technology but what’s been lost are basic human values. Then go back to Union Sundown and figure why the pursuit of profit is killing us. Good night. Thank you eddie.

NOTE: $ingapore doesn’t manufacture shoes. But if you have money to bank, we don’t ask difficult questions.

17. I Shall Be Free 10 [OMITTED]

This Was My Love, Julius & Ethel, Sweetheart Like You are from Infidels sessions April to May 1983.
Straight A’s In Love and When The Night Comes Falling are from Empire Burlesque sessions Feb to March 1985. These are new to us. We’ve never heard them before.

Track 17 is omitted as it is the same track as found on the out-of-print Bob Dylan CD-ROM of a decade or so ago.

  2. Thanks for sharing this over 25 year old musical document. Revealing and entertaining. Surprisingly good sound on my little laptop, though I was working/distracted at the time. Almost time for another listen on the IPOD while out for an early early morning walk (with little distractions) and then later today, I’ll pull out “Infidels” and “Empire Burlesque” and make some comparisons.

  5. Thanks for this treat. I never liked this album too much before but hearing the outtakes made me take another look at it. Great stuff.

  7. This is a treat–thanks for sharing it! I can see why “Julius & Ethel” hasn’t seen the light of day, but some of the other songs from these sessions are better than the ones that ended up on the album I’ll take “Straight As in Love” over “Union Sundown” any day.

  9. If they play, then they should download. Are you right clicking ‘Save Target As’? You should also be able to save them via most media players while playing. Good luck.
