NEIL YOUNG
Touch The Clouds [PWC 198, 1CD]

Various outtakes and live tracks. Very good soundboard?

Thanks to efforts by the fans and the internet, nowadays it is much easier to listen to complete shows when artists go on tour. Back in 1991, fans had to rely on such discs as Touch The Clouds, with their mix of outtakes, rehearsal tracks and live tracks to satisfy their thirst.

With such compilations, one is sometimes surprised with what is included among the tracks. For example, what prompted Neil Young to ask [with his tongue firmly in his cheek?] his audience, “How many of you remember a group called Buffalo Springfield?” Surely he must be jesting as the 1984 New Orleans crowd roared in response as Neil begins what is one of the group’s most popular songs - Flying On The Ground Is Wrong.

On its own, a pleasant disc with its mix of electric and acoustic tracks (more acoustic really) and, for older bootleg fans, another chance to visit an old companion.

This is what Philip Cohen noted: “This compilation is mostly unreleased concert recordings made between 1969 and 1984, augmented with a non-LP single version of Buffalo Springfield’s Mr. Soul, and several alternate mixes from the withdrawn first LP pressing of his debut solo album Neil Young.

“The version of Mr. Soul on the bootleg is a single mix with an alternate guitar solo. The version on Archives Vol. 1 is a totally unreleased take from acetate, previously heard on the Buffalo Springfield four-CD box set. The versions of Oh Lonesome Me and I Believe In You on the bootleg are mono mixes (possibly promo and/or single mixes), and I’ve Been Waiting For You is the mix from the first pressing of the Neil Young solo debut album (before the album cover design was changed). Archives Vol. 1 uses the later mix of the song. When I Believe in You and Oh Lonesome Me appear on Archives Vol. 1, they’re the stereo mixes.”

Thanks to Phil for sharing the tracks.

Note: A longtime music fan, Philip Cohen was a contributor to the now-defunct ICE Magazine and compiled the boxsets for The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Humble Pie and Nice.
