Sydney 2010 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Hordern Pavillion, Sydney, NSW, Australia, January 26, 2010. Very good FM broadcast (Triple J).

If Nirvana were seen as a cross between the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, then it was a matter of time or inevitably members of Nirvana and Led Zep would not only cross paths but share the same stage.

Them Crooked Vultures is the side-project of drummer Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), guitarist Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age) and bassist and multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin).

But what really surprised many listeners is how well the band gel together. [Live, the trio is augmented by guitarist Alain Johannes (Eleven).] It’s hard to imagine the group only had their first gig on August 9, 2009 and, by November 16, had released their self-titled debut album.

John Paul Jones has a nice story of the group’s meeting that he told The Sydney Morning Herald. “I met Josh almost a year ago today, actually, at Dave’s birthday party at [themed restaurant] Medieval Times,” Jones says. ”It was like a surreal blind date… [they were wearing cardboard crowns, eating ‘dragon soup’ and heckling a jousting knight]… As Dave said, it’s not somewhere you have your 40th birthday, more like your 14th. Anyway, we kind of got over the trauma of that meeting, got in the studio and just started playing - and things started clicking.

“Dave really wanted to play shows - and that’s the one thing I’ve missed over the last couple of decades, is actually playing live. We thought, well, we could do a really good album and then go out and take it on the road, have something to play.”

If not for the clean production and slick instrumentation, it’s like listening to a hard rock band from the ’70s. [Don’t the riffs on Spinning In The Daffodils recall Bad Company’s Rock Steady?] It’s only on Mind Eraser, No Chaser and parts of Caligulove - with a Sonic Youth fuzz guitar wash - that the band seemed to acknowledge the present.

And like the pros they are, these guys can rock with one hand tied behind their back. Them Crooked Vultures may even be touted as the second coming of Led Zeppelin by way of Jimi Hendrix (sample Nobody Loves Me And Neither Do I and Warsaw). Just don’t expect too much.

edeledeledel notes:

Tracks 1, 2, 3, 6, 8 - on the original, the song ended, and (the end of the) applause cut in abruptly: evidently, DJ comments/airchecks had been roughly edited out, right at the end of the song. Echoes of the last note and start of applause have been patched in from other songs, and volume normalised to match.

Tracks 6, 8 - airchecks over the top of the music. The air checks have been removed, and the music restored, using patches from the rest of the song.
