KEIJI HAINO, JIM O’ROURKE, YOSHIO KUGE
Shinjuku Jam 2010 [no label, 3CD]

Live at Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan, May 20, 2010. Very good audience recording.

If you are into experimental, avant garde or free jazz, this one’s for you. More so if you have long bus or train ride or maybe a short flight.

It’s possible the last time Keiji Haino, Jim O’Rourke and Yoshio Kuge played together was two years ago in May 2008. But on May 20, 2010, the three played an improvisational piece in Tokyo, Japan which lasts two-and-a-half hours.

Over his illustrious career, experimental musician Keiji Haino has performed with Derek Bailey, Peter Brotzmann, Lee Konitz, Bill Laswell, John Zorn and Fred Frith. One can’t get any more indie and experimental than Jim O’Rourke. While the musician/producer was associated with the Chicago experimental scene, he has also been with Gastr Del Sol and Sonic Youth, not to mention the Merce Cunningham dance company. Yoshio Kuge may be listed as a punk drummer but such labels become meaningless if you are performing with Haino and O’Rourke.

And word on the street is that “Haino never rehearses with a collaborator before a performance as a means of safeguarding the intricacies of improvisational dynamic”.

Thanks to fykfyk for sharing the lossless track on the Dime site. For the convenience of those who want to burn this as an audio CD, the track has been (judiciously) split into three CDs.
