MARIAN McPARTLAND WITH SUE MINGUS
New York 2003 [no label, 1CD]

Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland. New York, NY; 2003. Very good FM broadcast.

Since Charles Mingus’ death in 1979, Sue Mingus has formed a number of repertory bands to carry on the music of her late husband. These ensembles include the 14-piece Mingus Big Band, the Mingus Dynasty, the Five Guitars Play Mingus, the Epitaph Orchestra (which performs Mingus’ two-hour masterwork for 31 musicians), and the new 11-piece Mingus Orchestra. The Orchestra has performed on occasion with Elvis Costello, and it presently alternates at Fez Under Time Cafe with the Mingus Big Band.

In April 2002, Sue Mingus published a memoir entitled Tonight at Noon about life with the her late husband. She has also published two educational books: Charles Mingus: More Than a Fake Book and Charles Mingus: More Than a Play-Along Book.

  3. Thanks Big O and NPR of course. Loved the Mingus tunes and the playing. Also the stories. Mingus was a tremendous composer and worthy of Marian’s piano playing.
