Wien 2009 [no label, 2CD]

Live at Stadtfest am Michaelerplatz (Open Air), Wein, Austria, April 25, 2009. Ex SBD stereo.

Ever wondered what happened to the progenitors of jangle pop and alternative music? They were bands from America like Green On Red, The Walkabouts and The Dream Syndicate, chiefly influenced by psychedelic rock, The Byrds and The Velvet Underground.

Like the Velvets, the alternative that didn’t turn into the mainstream sputtered out. These bands splintered and their creative lights continue in the shadows making music for indie labels. It’s not surprising that indie bands seem to fare better in Europe where bands, that don’t write and sing in English, understand what “struggle” means. In fractured Europe, terms like outsider and alien are better appreciated. This is also the attitude that anchors punk and alternative music.

This concert in Vienna, Austria, attracted like-minded performers like unsigned American singer-songwriter Eleni Mandell and Austrians Ernst Molden and Marilies Jagsch. Another fellow traveller along the dusty indie route is Slovenian folk rocker, Vlado Kreslin, now 56.

The intention was to celebrate the indie spirit with a tribute to Lou Reed, the mainman of the Velvets. All the talents came together as Satellites Of Love, named after a Reed song. If John Cale is the Velvets’ experimental side then Reed is recognised as the pop in the Velvets. So no droning tracks at this concert. From the jangling intro to Rock & Roll, you know this is what IT IS.

This show was intended to be a “gig-only CD” but plans fell through and Chris Eckman and Steve Wynn representing the Satellites Of Love, have allowed for it to be shared. Thanks to hanwaker who made it possible through Dime. Thanks to fracas64 for the CD art.

Green On Red, Dream Syndicate, The Walkabouts live on in the internet with many fans sharing live recordings by these bands. You don’t have to be rich to be remembered.

  2. One of the best concerts ruined by Steve Wynn..
Unsatisfied with butchering the good old Neil Young stuff he’s now undoing VU.. Worst version of ‘Walk On The Wild Side’, including some Karaoke versions I had to suffer to.

  3. Ruined by Steve Wynn? You must be crazy.
The only “problem” with this recording is that it could use some mixing. The guitars could be louder and the vocals are too loud.
But it was a great concert -I’ve been there.
