COWBOY JUNKIES
Camden 2010 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the XPoNential Music Festival, Wiggins Park, Camden, NJ, July 18, 2010. Very good FM broadcast.

The Cowboy Junkies might be remembered for their haunting recording inside Toronto’s Church of the Holy Trinity and have, over the years, developed into a solid blues rock group built around Margo Timmins’ haunting vocals. Live and in the open, the Cowboy Junkies not only charmed but held the audience under a captivating spell. And the Xponential Music Festival in Camden NJ seemed like an ideal venue to showcase songs from their new album. Before breaking into I Cannot Sit Sadly By Your Side, Margo said: “Our new album, Renmin Park, is no happier than all the other albums we’ve ever written and this next song sort of proves it.” And before Just Want To See, the vocalist said: “Now here’s a happy song, all about death,” to the crowd’s amusement.

Arthur Shkolnik posted at phawker.com: “Cowboy Junkies - a band heavily rooted in country, rock, and blues - took the River stage by surprise with a laid back, bass heavy introduction. With a voice softer than satin and lyrics harder than a bed of nails, lead singer Margo Timmins creates an effectively charming yet somewhat insincere juxtaposition within her music.”

And TJ Gunther, over at xpn.org, wrote: “Timmins’s voice wasn’t the only thing with edge. Hunted and Bring You Down both featured heavier distortion on the guitars and a more experimental rock feel than the other songs. The variety in styles showed the full extent of what the Junkies are capable of. Despite the heat, the crowd loved the Cowboy Junkies and their blues rock hybrid. There’s a reason they’ve been around for years, and the Junkies showed that today.”
