Into The Light [PR005, 1CD]

Mix of outtakes, radio broadcasts, demos, rehearsals and live in Japan. Very good soundboard.

Those who enjoyed the recent Sweet offering will enjoy this.

This collection of outtakes, radio broadcasts and home studio demos by the legendary British “Glam Rock” group was, to a certain extent, an official bootleg, approved by guitarist Andy Scott (one of the group’s two surviving members), and it was one of an extensive series of CDs and DVDs compiled and marketed online by Sweet historian Kevin Smith, but a few years ago, Mr Smith closed his online shop citing his poor health, and so the discs that he released, such as this one, are no longer available. - Philip Cohen

Thanks to Phil for sharing the tracks.

Note: A longtime music fan, Philip Cohen was a contributor to the now-defunct ICE Magazine and compiled the boxsets for The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Humble Pie and Nice.

Track 01. Paperback Writer (3.1MB)
Recorded for the BBC but heard for the first time in its entirety here.

Track 02. The Kids Gone Mad (7.1MB)
A rare outtake from the Sweet Fanny Adams sessions. This song was never taken any further than this first take. Mike Chapman is singing lead vocals.

Track 03. Yesterday’s Rain (6.8MB)
Recorded at the Level Headed tour rehearsals in December 1977.

Track 04. Getting In The Mood For Love (5.5MB)
An early mix of this Waters Edge track without keyboard overdubs.

Track 05. The Who Medley - I Can’t Explain/Substitute/Happy Jack/Pictures Of Lilly/My Generation/I’m A Boy (9.9MB)
I have included this for its rarity value rather than recording quality. This was recorded on the ill fated Belgium tour of 1972.

Track 06. Anthem One (5.7MB)
This was also recorded at the rehearsals for the Level Headed tour.

Track 07. Maggie (4.7MB)
A back track recording for the ID Crisis album. It was never taken any further than this.

Track 08. Need A Lot Of Lovin’ (4.3MB)
A rough mix of the track that seems lost in the vaults somewhere.

Track 09. Strong Love (1.0MB)
Track 10. Where D’ya Go (5.7MB)
This is the original demo version before Mick added in the drums.

Track 11. The Lies In Your Eyes (4.9MB)
An early mix followed by a bit of studio fun from the I.D. Crisis sessions with Steve on piano and vocal; Andy on drums and Mick on bass.

Track 12. Jazz-session (4.6MB)
Track 13. Someone Else Will (7.4MB)
Recorded on 2/1/81 at the rehearsals for the Lyceum show.

Track 14. Strange Girl (6.5MB)
This demo version was recorded in Andy’s home studio.

Track 15. You’re Not Wrong For Loving Me (5.7MB)
This and Lady Starlight - recorded on the band’s three-week tour of Japan. This is from the show at Kobe.

Track 16. Lady Starlight (5.7MB)
Track 17. Gunner Of Love (4.7MB)
Track 18. Fire In My Heart (4.4MB)
Both these songs were written by Andy and Chris Bradford and recorded at Pacific Studios in January 1986. But never taken any further than this demo.

  4. is the date 2/1/81 english or american: Feb., 1st or Jan., 2nd?

By Walter on Aug 7, 2010

  5. Walter,

The recording dates were almost certainly being stated by the British system, since the compiler (Kevin Smith) was British.

  6. Whoever made the cover got the tracks (A)In the wrong order & (B) missed some off.
Track 12 is marked as “Lady Starlight” but on the download it’s track 16.
Track 12 on the download is known as “Jazz - Session” but it’s really The Sweet messing around in the studio on the old Erroll Garner/Johnny mathis song “Misty”.

  7. Hi Walter!
The Sweet played “Jan 4, 1981 at Lyceum Theatre, London” so the rehearsal of “Someone Else Will” should have been on Jan 2, 1981.
