It’s not often we get such a gift 36 years later but that’s just what we have here. A previously uncirculated and unheard performance with Cats On A Smooth Surface from the soundboard.
We’re all aware of Bruce’s club hopping summer and his frequent appearances with local and visiting artists. But no appearances were more frequent than his late night guesting spot with Cats On A Smooth Surface.
A couple of things make this appearance really special, after six previous appearances with Cats On A Smooth Surface at the Stone Pony, this is the earliest recorded performance to surface. In addition, it’s the live debut of the River outtake “From Small Things (Big Things One Day Come)”.
It is a soundboard recording and therefore better than the majority of noisy audience recordings captured at this time. However, it is a rough soundboard that came with some issues. The first being a click about every 5-10 seconds throughout, this was easily corrected without doing any damage to the music.
Secondly, it was either recorded or transferred at peak levels which created a bit of distortion in places. iZotope RX did a fine job cleaning most of this up as well. With all that said it is much better than the raw transfer but not pristine.
We are fortunate ‘chrs1961815′ is knowledgeable enough to realize it was mis-dated on his copy and to take the time to track down the correct date.
I just cleaned it up a bit and posted, all thanks should go to ‘chrs1961815′ for getting the files to me for ALL of us to enjoy!
