CREAM
Secret History [Left Bank Productions MS1, 2CD]

Outtakes from the Fresh Cream sessions and BBC sessions. Very good soundboard.

I have upgraded the 15 tracks on Disc One of this compilation of 1960’s studio outtakes, acetates and radio sessions. For some reason, there were occasional annoying left channel noises, possibly because of tape damage on the 15 tracks. Since the recordings were in mono, I re-dubbed by analogue connection, using a “y” connector, and copying only from the right channel, the channel without the noises. This is a substantial improvement, though I couldn’t do anything about the muddy sound on the takes of “I Feel Free”. - Philip Cohen

Cream - Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton (for some, it was a time when he still mattered). And for others, Fresh Cream, the group’s debut album in 1966, signalled the arrival of blues rock. Even then, the album was a pretty mixed affair. While tracks such as Sleep Time Time, Rollin’ and Tumblin and Cat’s Squirrel were decidedly bluesy, the music was equally psychedelic in parts. And what does one make of Wrapping Paper, with its dancehall feel? Or Robert Johnson’s Four Until Late, which has a certain swagger that could even appeal to Cliff Richard then? And listening to these takes of I Feel Free, surprisingly, they also recall Aquarius and the 5th Dimension, which only goes to show that while Cream took from the blues, they also gave something back in return.

While the Secret History two-CD set has been in circulation for a while, music fan and compiler Philip Cohen really did fans a favour by “upgrading” the sound on the first CD.

Thanks Phil for all the efforts and for sharing the tracks.

Note: A longtime music fan, Philip Cohen was a contributor to the now-defunct ICE Magazine and compiled the boxsets for The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Humble Pie and Nice.
