Hampshire 1969 [A Hogweeds Audio Restoration, 1CD]

This is an audio restoration of a concert from the Floyd’s spring UK tour of 1969, the same tour during which the live Ummagumma album was recorded. This show was recorded on portable reel-to-reel from the audience by the late Nick Ralph (who also recorded the 1969 Royal Albert Hall concert, among others). Nick was a member of the student union Arts Committee, and one can only guess at his involvement in scheduling the Floyd to play and finding himself a nice location to record the ensuing event. His mono recording documents the complete concert, and is possibly the best sounding audience recording of the band from 1969.
The show was performed only a week after the Manchester Ummagumma date. Rather than perform the Man/Journey material during this phase of the tour, they were playing songs that were well worn in, possibly continuing the agenda of recording them.
The only exception is the performance of ‘The Beginning’ (Green is the Colour) segueing into an improvisation which, although being quite unique, has nevertheless been credited as ‘Beset by Creatures of the Deep’ due to its close musical similarities with CwtAE. At first it sounds a little like they are going to do their usual CwtAE segue, but it doesn’t go there (understandably, as they’d just played it), instead becoming a slide guitar improvisation over an intensifying and then subsiding modal foundation.
During this improv, a few of Dave’s phrases remind strongly of (The Doors) Robby Krieger’s playing on ‘The End’, also a largely modal piece. There are similar phrases heard during the build up and wind down of CwtAE, highlighting the improv as being a variation on that theme.
The talkativeness of the audience and somewhat restrained applause reminds me that at this point in their career, Pink Floyd were a band in transition. Although they were appearing at some prestigious city venues, more often they played to audiences around the regions. Indeed this was a second show of the day for them; they’d just come from playing a free festival in Camden. As that event started at 10pm, even allowing for them being on first, playing a short set, making a quick departure and prior setting up by the band’s crew in Southampton, they couldn’t have started until the wee hours of the morning. Maybe the hectic evening explains Roger announcing the first song as Astrominy Dominé.

The master source was seeded around 2007, and the two generational copies were supplied by neonknight in their raw transfer form as hi-res files. Indeed it was neonknight’s suggestion that this show be restored.
You’d expect that the master source would be the obvious choice to work with, but no. Both the master and 1st gen versions contained numerous dropouts and instabilities, with loss of detail, no doubt the result of tape damage over the years. By contrast the 2nd gen tape is relatively smooth, with a stable fine-grained treble, and without the same dropouts. This gives it a smoother texture than the other versions, more pleasing with less harshness in the top end. So the 2nd gen copy was likely made prior to tape damage occurring to the master lineage.
Restoration notes:
- All processing done at 96kHz, 32bit in Izotope RX8 advanced.
- neonknight’s transfer was supplied as a single file raw digitisation from stereo cassette of the originally mono source. The channels were very similar in audio quality with little stereo wandering, but the left had marginally more hiss and minor cyclical swelling of noise levels. Hence I chose to work with the right channel alone, duplicating it onto the left to create a true mono source. This removed any need of azimuth or channel level/frequency adjustments.
- Pitch was consistently about a semi-tone flat, and required raising by +1.1, with time adjustment compensating to shorten the total duration by a little over 3 minutes.
- An eq curve was applied to brighten the top end, attenuate upper bass (100-300 Hz), and boost lower bass (below 100Hz). I also pushed the treble in a shelf up to 10kHz by +10dB. This created a wall of hiss, however running a carefully defined noise shaping curve restored the hiss to low levels while leaving any musical signal nicely revealed. The smoothness of the top end on the 2nd gen tape made this successful.
- Removed a whopping amount of 50Hz hum + harmonics during quieter sections (present on the master).
- Removed bumps/clicks at beginning, and a brief repeated section of applause at end of AD.
- There was a short section of tuning up before SoS missing from the 2nd gen, and I’ve restored it from the 1st gen. It was riddled with tiny dropouts, and I’ve repaired this to some extent by ‘backfilling’ with RX 8 Ambience Match.
- Section by section nitpicking: adjustments to even up frequencies, repair dropouts, remove a few clicks, balance relative levels, repair volume irregularities, restore tonality in loud passages etc. In particular, there were numerous micro dropouts in GitC.
- Applied very minor amount of stereoization (Ozone) to open up the pure mono, which makes listening more natural and allows the ear to discern more detail, particularly on headphones.
- Master to -0.6dB, fades, track and export to flac 96kHz/24 bit. Also 44/16 version.
The aim of this restoration is to repair (as much as possible) the limitations of the source, rather than retain the character of a late 60s analogue tape. While I hope this makes for an improved listening experience, it’s not intended to supplant the raw transfer version.
